I hate Knoppix

Well, i downloaded it as i have seen so many threads about it, burned it first on one cd, rebooted but got lots of errors, so i burned it on another, got the came errors (cloop "blahblah" input/output error) tried different bios settings, tried it on two cd-players, one IDE and one SCSI, tried it with boot floppy on IDE and boot floppy on SCSI...

Didn't get it to work... maybe it's my system... got an 750 viper with one pioneer IDE cdrom and one SCSI-Pioneer DVD +rw..

Thinking about doing my own boot-cd based on Slack (of course 😉

Sounds like an awesome reason to "hate" it

Got that right BBWF. Hey SnapIT, atleast you could post the errors so we can figure out whats up. Depending on the error, you might want to try burning it at a slower speed.

Okey... i dislike it because it doesn't work for me, on my setup i have only had problems with it, is that enough reason to dislike it?

Nope, its not a good enough reason to dislike it, especially since you obviously haven't even made any efforts to figure out what's up.

Running cfdisk from mode 2 "cloop blahblahblah input/output error"

Sometimes it hangs in the middle of the X startup, sometimes it doesn't get that far, it never manages to start a program outsid or inside X...

I figured it was a problem with the CD, so i burned another, same problem, so i made a boot floppy, same problem, so i booted from scsi-cd, same problem, so i turned every performance option off in bios, same problem...

I tried, tried and tried but i got the same problem...

I hate it because it doesn't work for me, is that ok with people or should i love that POS that will not work where every other distro has?

Oh i haven't? trust me, if it was any other distro i would have discarded it a long time ago... but since it comes highly recommended i was prepared to try to make it work...

Did you even read my post about what i did? what do you suggest as the next step?

With eyes wide shut, the brave adventurer waltzes into the trap.

SnapIT. I'm quite sure that "cloop blahblahblah input/output error" wasn't printed to the screen by knoppix. Especially since debian and its variants are usually extremely verbal about any potential issue.

Without any error messages its kinda hard to figure out whats wrong or suggest a next step.

I hate it too.
The way it boots from nothing into a running OS with 2 bazillion applications, from a 10 cent cdr, in about two minutes on most machines (except SnapIt's 😛 )
It makes my daily OS look like dung, and for that, I hate it.

"cloop 0000555334/54456464554 input/output error" better? the numbers aren't the ones that were on the screen because there were hundreds of lines just like that one after trying to start any app... ANY app, even cfdisk...

Sometimes between the lines of "cloop" i get a "scsi delivered more information than expected" error too...

Now, i understand that this is a problem in the communication between the driver and my interface, but what i don't get is why i get the same error whether i run it on a SCSI or an IDE setup...

The CD checks out fine when written and in compare too, so... all other cd's work fine...

Don't think i haven't tried to get it to work, i have spent half a day just to be able to run the darn thing, but it refuses to work on my setup... :-(

Have you checked your checksums? is the download ISO complete, or corrupt?

I downloaded KNOPPIX with 56k!!! and I have a good version, and works FLAWLESSLY! If I had another harddrive I'd make a HD install, but I dont have much space left, and I dont wanna screw up my NTFS partitions 😛 (from user errors, not Knoppix ones)

From a 10 cent cdr i can make it go "cloop blahblahblah input/output error" truly amazing... isn't it? 😉

And i assume you have actually tried ALL setups except mine as you know that it works on ALL of them...

Actually, i don't care, i want to have it up and running, but i can't get it to work, it's frustrating to sit and try, try and try, i am just glad i tried now and didn't wait until i had to use it as a rescue...

Hmmm, depending on which kernel Knoppix uses, your hardware may not be supported. I wonder if its possible to replace knoppix's kernel? Have you tried google or google groups?

Yes, i have checked it against the MD5... it's all good, works in one other computer, in yet another i get the same error...

If it was corrupted it would have refused to burn anyways...

I believe that the AIC78xxx is supported from 2.0 and forward... it should work on the 3.2 release of Knoppix... Usenet.. yeah, any good newsgroups concerning knoppix?

The damn setup works with both Slack and Deb... considering that knoppix is based on Deb, it SHOULD work... i suppose i could use my custom deb kernel and insert that into the ISO and see if that helps...

I'm gonna re-download the whole thing, burn it and report back...

Maybe my title was a bit strong, i don't hate it, i just want it to work... well, i guess you know how frustrating these things can get...

If the MD5 signature checks, then it's a waste of time and bandwidth to download it again.

And to honest, while it may be a common problem, I've never experienced any trouble due to a CDR or burn speed, whether it's inexpensive media or otherwise.

Most likely, Knoppix doesn't like something with your configuration.

Uh oohhh, this sounds like a hardware problem then 🙁

I still remember trying to get debian potato to play nice with my scsi card in a retro-fitted ps/1..... Ahh the sweet memories of the times long past 😛

It is normal to be angry that it doesn't work, but it is utterly stupid to declare something a "POS" simply because it failed in your single test environment. That's like saying a ferrari sucks because you saw one with a flat tire. The internet must be a real worthless POS with all of the problems it has.

I have no problems with it.

Be aware that the latest build, 20-5-2003, IS corrupted on several of the official FTP mirrors.
