That's right, I hate the ipods.
Back when mp3 players were barely coming out, I owned a Roxio Volt, which had a max of 64-128MB SD card in it. Back then in 2000, it was the sh!t. Then I went towards the CD (mp3) players, again, it was Roxio, it was also the sh!t at it's time.

Then, I started seeing the Creative brands come up. I got myself a nice 30gig Creative Zen Xtra Nomad for under $200 back then, I felt top dog....

...then all of sudden ipods begin to be the trend... the "mp3" player to have. Commercials make them look cool and their unique "white" earphone wires make it flag out to everyone "hey! I have an expensive POS, I'm cool!"

During this time I get jacked for my Creative player at my own party (a$$holes), so this year I get into the market for a new mp3 player. Back when I got my 30giger, these were barely reaching $250 in price. Now the market is flooded with these mp3 players well over 250 and has all these retarded features like video playback, games, whatever... crap I simply do not NEED.

All I want is a simple player, one that does it's job, a real "mp3" player. I can't find anything and all I find are overpriced (yes i know the concept of S&D) players with features I do not care for...

So i say screw it, I go to ebay and find a Creative Zen Xtra for $130, old school for the win.

However, I do not have my sweet leather case since that was jacked as well, so I proceed to go to BestBuy and Target to find some kind of replacement. What do I see? "IPOD casing" for your "NANO" for your "iRIVER" for your iTHIS for your iTHAT. That's fine, ok, great, I still need a case for my creative.... well no one makes it apparently, not even the genertic universal brands. It seems everyone is wanting a piece of the ipod glazed pie.

I say screw it...but while I'm at BestBuy and since I have some gift certificates to use, oh and since I've been meaning to buy a new stereo for my 05' scion tc (before it got all trendy) I head to the car stereo section.

Everything there is ipod focused. "IPOD" ready. Wow, my mp3 player can definately work since it is just a basic male-male aux connection, but wtf is up with all this "IPOD" ready crap. It's "MP3 ready" you bastards!

Everywhere you go, everything seems to be "ipod" ready. I gotta admit though, they are certainly targetting the right customers and doing one hell of a marketing strategy, but it freakin' annoys the hell out of me!!! I just hate how everywhere you go when you read mp3 it equals ipod. Am I alone?

/end of rant. TGIF, have a good one.

I had a similar feeling for the mp3 = iPod as well, but you get over it, and realise it's just marketing for the stupid people.

Anyways, what's S&D?

I also dislike this trend. However, Steve Jobs is laughing his ass off all the way to the bank. Suckers!

I ordered black headphones intead of white because I didn't want people to get the impression that I was another iPod fanboy. I'm still sporting a 256MB Sony MP3 Player. ^^;

amusing how you rant about how now digital music player = ipod but have no problem with digital music = mp3.
example:
Wow, my mp3 player can definately work since it is just a basic male-male aux connection, but wtf is up with all this "IPOD" ready crap. It's "MP3 ready" you bastards!

i'm neutral to the whole thing. i do like your writing though.

noted, but mp3 is a pretty general term, and easy to spell out especially in this day. Saying "digital music ready" doesn't exactly fly hahaha. What irks me is the fact that it's brand specific at this point. "ipod ready" my ass.

Thanks for the comment. Lifer has it's benefits it seems ;)

What does "^^;" mean? I'm thinking it is a face, but I can't imagine how that'd look on a head.

I also hate Apple's naming scheme now. It's i-this, i-that. It sounded cool 3 years ago but it's just annoying now.

Most of the car stereos are ipod ready, not just "mp3 ready". Mp3 ready would just mean that it has an aux input, which just about every one will, an ipod ready one will often work with the sync connector on an ipod and you'll be able to control the ipod through the stereo.

Are ipods getting played out? Sure, but it's not only because of marketing. It was one of the first MP3 players out on the market with a genuinly good user interface AND a good marketing team behind it. You have to admit, apple played a huge part in starting the MP3 player market by releasing the ipod.

Yeah, i believe apple has people by the balls when it comes to marketing. People let them get away with any design flaw and praise them. "You should research before you buy and realize it scratches, everything scratches", "Sound quality is the BEST, using a cassette adapter is as good as a cd in my deck". "I bought a mac because I liked my ipod so much". "I like the white earbuds cause they were meant to be used with my player".

Why the hell do you HAVE to buy a $2x-3x case to keep it protected and looking good. My cell phone is like a tank compared to it.

I have an ipod by the way after trading in my iriver h320. I like the UI and synch software. Other than that. Meh
Go to www.ilounge.com and you will see a bunch of brainwashed zombies who will defend the ipod on every aspect with their life. Plus the 100 noobs everyday, who will create an account to post a thread about how to transfer music, but will not read the damn manual.

ipod ready means that the ipod can be controlled through the head unit and charged with the same hookup, which is quite nice. infact it's the only reason why i'd ever consider getting an ipod. I don't want to be fumbling with an mp3 player while i'm driving. having control through the headunit means I can put it in my glovebox and out of sight.

You can't fault apple's strategy, but I agree with what you are saying. It is very difficult to compete with the ipod when even non-apple companies act like it is the only mp3 player that exists.

I have a 2G ipod, so everything that says it is ipod ready really isn't for me, since they changed around the ports.

4/10...that's a pretty weak rant.

Just buy an iPod already and be done with it. I have 3 of them. They are popular for a reason. :p
