Which to do.

Also, current job lets me work from home 1-2 days a week starting a week or so ago.

The mileage is worth the benifits/vacations/sickdays etc... --ONLY if thats round trip, if its 170 one way, no way. Look for a better job than option 2 locally.

Did you say unlimited sick days. Take the whole year off. Option 1 FTW!

Option 2 for sure ... do you really want to waste what, 2.5 hours + per day in a stressful, non-productive environment. I'm in a similar situation, and I'm leaning towards trying to work from home more often or working in a job-share situation where I'm only here half of the time. Spend time with your family (if you have one).

250 working days a year. 11 hours of work a day (including the ~3 hours driving). Total hours worked = 250 * 11 = 2750.

Assume the benefits are worth ~$15,000. But at ~35 cents per mile in gas, maintanence, and lost vehicle value you spend $15,000 a year on commuting.

Net wage per hour including benefits: ($50000 + $15000 - $15000)/2750 = $18.18.

So do you want a $5 an hour raise or not?

Contract job doesnt mean guarunteed work after that contract period of work. I wouldnt want me/my family having to worry about if I would still have a job or not.

How is that any different from just about any job now? Seems like he only needs to worry while his significant other is in school anyways (which the 18 month contract should cover).

Option 1 seems to make the most sense for longterm.

That is a lot of benefits. Unlimited sick days is something that I would find tough to give up. Being able to get paid while sick with the flu, or during a time you injure yourself (god forbid) is a very nice benefit.

The current job sounds like it may even offer opportunities to get raises.

The new job sounds like something they could just drop you anytime they want.

I would save up and move closer to the current job.

I know my job will always be there tomorrow, My company is hiring people as hard as they can go because we have expanded so much over the years, and are still growing.

That commute sucks - but so does the lack of benefits and security in the current job. I think you need another option in your poll "None of the above". I'd seriously be looking for something else.

I do, and I know that a company that spends over 100k on each employees training, and 6 months of time, isnt just going to start cutting people loose anyway.

At $0.35/mile to operate your vehicle (that's what my company pays for mileage at least - but they don't pay for commuting of course), you are working till about noon just to pay for your commute that day.

My wife got accepted to grad school 100 miles away with a full, free ride?
