There is one single main reason why ebay sellers charge so much. Sure its partially to lure you in with a lower price, but its primarily because ebay doesnt charge fees on shipping. Therefore it is absolutely in the sellers best interest for shipping to be as high as possible, and the selling price to be as low as possible. That is the single most prevalent reason why the vast majority of ebay auctions have super highly inflated shipping. Only noobs charge low shipping. :p

Unfortunately, most people dont know this, so they see at as gouging.

The biggest problem though, is that most people can't add. Somehow people think its worse to pay 45 for an item with 15 shipping, than 55 for an item with 5 shipping. Even though its the exact same price for the buyer, the first seller is somehow an immoral bastard, and the second is a noble seller.

Theres a good chance ebay will remove that auction cause its so obviously trying to avoid fees, but by charging that much for shipping, he's saving a ton of money, and it adds up quick.

Unfortunately, this may not be worth it in the face of the people who will bitch at him because they didnt read the auction.

After reading this thread, I said fvck it, I need to get paid. So instead of shipping something priority flat rate box for $7.70 (I charged $8), I used my own box and priority mail for $3.95. I should do that next time, double the actual s/h fee, like everybody else.

There are priority boxes that you can use for $3.95 if that's what the shipping cost is, I believe they have them the same size as teh priority flat rate.

When someone charges $8 s/h for a $4 shipping rate, the other $4 is a handling fee. I usually charge a little more than just the postage. This covers me for bubble wrap, peanuts, and the occasional increase in my estimate due to a zone or my weight being a little off.

On FedEx and UPS shipping I charge a bit more as I have to buy a box for ground shipping, I have to pay for the tape, the peanuts, the buddle wrap. If I need corner reinforcers that is extra out of my pocket.

Usually even with that extra when I did alot of shipping as a business, I'd usually lose on the shipping end a bit. Things like returns, problems with the order, etc. Still most of my sales were at the lowest price point at the times. No one got ripped off.

The same thing goes with the people who contact you for a 20+ item order and want the best pricing as a 'package' and then try to pick 1 or 2 items and think you are going to do that. In my business philosopfy I will lower my profit on each item when someone is buying a lot. Shipping everything to one address saves me a bit of aggravation as well and costs, one larger box is cheaper that several smaller ones.

That's not much of a scam. You sound like one of the many whining eBay bidders that email the seller with crap like this.[/quote]

There is another reason why people on eBay inflate shipping costs: they can avoid paying you back money if the item you get gets refunded(seller pockets all shipping costs no matter how high it is). Suppose you bought a $.10 book with $20 shipping, that amounts to $20.01. if you were to refund the book you would only get back $.10. It also helps the seller avoid paying eBay higher listing fees and final price fees(you lose more money if you sell an item at 20.00 due to lising fees rather than .10)because theres a loop hole in eBay that allows the seller to keep all shipping fees (ebay cant take away any money that goes towards shipping). ...This has been another episode of "Nooow You Know" ... lol i cant sleep.

i always ship USPS priority w/ delivery confirmation, cheaper and faster! But on small items i charge $6 fixed shipping and shipping comes out to $4.35 cheapest, 10 at the most. and larger items get 10-16 fixed shipping. i try not to make a profit on shipping but i try not to lose either but if i am getting $200 for an item but lost $4 i could care less
