I HATE CONSOLES... however!!!!

A customer of mine is giving me their 6 yo Toshiba Projection TV. It's 50 inch 81 model HD ready I think blah blah. Anyway, would this be a good tv to buy a console for?

Currently my only tv is a 27" CTR, and I don't have any consoles. Strictly PC gaming for me but it might be ok on a huge tv like that.

If it's 6 years old it probably isn't even HD, it's just standard def 480i or maybe 480p.

So yes, a PS2 would a good match for it 🙂

Is it a super big rear projection CRT TV? I think it might be a 1080i TV. If regular HD looks good on it, then either an Xbox360 or PS3 ought to, too. But I think you should verify that it's HD ready and get rid of the "I think blah blah."

Well, these ppl are my richest customers and buy only the best. They actually have a lamp that cost $800, LOL. So I can't pick it up till monday because they are in the states. What I did was take some info they gave me and looked it up on Ebay. I think it must be this Tv or something like it.

It's just that I would like to play Mario Galaxy and/or Mass Effect, different consoles I know. But big screen compared to my 19" LCD computer monitor.

Based on what little I could gather out of that ebay post, its basically a 540p set, so its a little better than SDTV, but on a screen that size you'll need to sit a good ways back to not notice the pixelation. It won't be terrible for the newer consoles, since it seems half the games aren't actually even rendered at 720p anyway, but don't expect the picture to compare to one of the new whizbang 1080p sets. I'm not a big fan of rear projections sets myself (with some exclusions), but if you're getting it for free I wouldn't complain.

You do know that Mass Effect is going to the PC, right? Granted it has some completely idiotic DRM issues (which were recently swapped for some equally if not even worse DRM restrictions), so I don't think I'd give them money for it (or pirate it either).

I didn't know Mass Effect was coming to PC, I sure hope Halo 3 makes its way to the PC also.

I did used to have a N64 back in the Golden Eye/Mario 64 days... I kind of miss sitting on a couch playing games. At least every once in a while, the only problem is I really only want to play one or two games per console LOL.

Not so sure I'm thrilled about this TV anymore, I'll still have to pick it up since I gave my word. Then I'll really be able to tell if it's any good... I've been eying LCD's for the last year, they keep getting cheaper.

Aw man, I wish someone would give me a 50" projection TV. I don't even care about the bad viewing angle, just something to get me away from my cruddy 27" CRT.

Though I am considering hooking up the ol' Xbox 360 to my 22" LCD monitor via a VGA cable. Just have to get the cable really.

I have the Toshiba 50H81 tv. I've been using it for the last 5 years and it works great. It's a 1080i tv with component inputs (no DVI, VGA or HDMI). I used to have my xbox 360 hooked up to it (xbox is not connected to a projector) and it looked great. I watch HDTV on it everyday and the picture is excellent (on par with my in-laws 50" sony plasma tv). DVDs also look good on the tv. You'll want blinds on your windows, because the picture gets pretty washed out when the sun shines on it.

It does take up a lot of space, but if someone was giving me the tv, I wouldn't hesitate for a minute.

I think you misread the ebay post. It's actually a 1080i tv. It converts 480i/p to 540p, but passes 1080i signals straight through. 720p also will not look very good on this tv because it's converted to 540p. I set my cable box to output everything in 1080i, because the scaler in the tv made 720p signals look really bad, but at 1080i everything looks really sharp.

I have no doubt that Halo 3 will be released on the PC, possibly even before people stop caring about Halo 3.

Too late. 😀

That looks like the TV my brotherinlaw has. If it is it really looks like crap, regular TV looks like crap and the PS2 they have on it looks like crap. He got it around 6-7 years ago.

672,668 Halo 3 Players (Last 24 Hours) There will be a significantly higher number than that for the weekend. 😉

HD should look VERY good on that TV. Just set everything to output 1080i and it will be glorious.

CRT rear project TVs still produce some of the best HD images you can get.

If you're sitting perfectly eye-level and the room is totally dark. Otherwise they look like shaiza.

Yeah, I just picked it up today and it's VERY NICE. I thought it looked blurry but they also gave the manual and I went through the digital convergence, first in the centre then all the corners and now it's perfect. It looks a lot better then any other Projection tv I seen, it looks like my LCD monitor in fact.

This is the one I got. My only problem is that I don't have HD signal in my cable and some of the buttons on the remote, I have to press very hard to make them work. But soon as I get my cable remote programed that won't be an issue.

Man I'm happy I got this tv, I just spent $800 on my PC (new Mobo, Ram and e8400 intel cpu) and now I'm thinking I'll buy a console for the first time in 10 years, LOL. No shooters on console for me though, I can't aim with a controller.
