I HATE COMPUTERS!!

ok i just plugged in my amd 1.4 Gig CPU and it shows up in the bios as 1050MHZ. so i set it up to 10 X 140, it crashes in the bios!!
i flashed the bios just now and still nothing works 🙁 !!
my mobo is kt7-a raid and OS is win2k. i need help.

Depends on your board. Post what mobo you have and I am sure you will get more help. Could be that your cpu is designed for a 133Mhz FSB and your board is only set to 100Mhz. If the board supports 133, it will either be set in the BIOS or with a jumper. When I first plugged my 1.47 Athlon XP into my board, it showed up at 1.1 because the FSB was set to 100Mhz. Post more details and you'll get more help.

As Shanti pointed out, look in your bios under "softmenu" and change it to 133MHz. Check your manual for more info.

The correct setting is not 10x140, but 10.5 x 133(.333333) = 1.4 GHz
Apparently some of your cards or memory cannot handle a 140 FSB.

Its also obviously not unlocked, since this person doesn't know what they are doing.

Changing the multiplier on a locked cpu will produce that effect.

Clear your cmos (always unplug your powersupply when you do this because power is still running in the board), this should get you running again. And like others in this post have said, you need to up your fsb to 133 and keep your multiplier at 10.5. I had issues with my KT7A right at 140 fsb, technically the 1.4 T-bird came unlocked so running it at 10 * 140 should be possible, but you are taking the PCI/AGP bus out of spec and maybe its just the Abit board, but like I said I was totally unstable at 140fsb.

I do have an interesting question for you, did it crash after you rebooted from making the changes or while you was making the changes? Because it doesn't change anything until it reboots. What might of happened is your having heat issues from your heatsink install and it just took a minute or so to build up the amount of heat for it to go unstable.

One little trick you can do if you don't want to clear your cmos while playing with settings is if it won't boot or won't go into bios without crashing (clearly a sign of instability). Then turn it off, press and hold the INSERT key and press the power button. This forces the board to boot at default settings.

Good luck.

well if i set it up to some high clock i.e. (10X140) or (11X133), it comes back and crashes right after the boot. so i reboot again to fix that, it would crash in the middle of my changes...... what does that sound like?
i have a super orb on it.
also locked meaning i cant overclock right?
unlock means i can overclock correct?

now i have it at 1040, and if i go higher it would crash in the bios !!

That kinds sound like what Warcon was talking about, and I guess if you has your HSF installed wrong, especialy on a T-Bird, it could happen.

We could do with more info like what PSU you are using, temps etc and I would try getting it stable first before you try overclocking, walk before you can run 😉.

the PSU is an ANTEC 400W cpu. could it be the superorb heatsink+fan? i had it running on the 1 gig athlon with no problems 🙁
i even have the paste between the CPU and the Heatsink.

Probably since that cooler is not listed on the AMD approved list however AMD are slow to update it,go here for AMD cooler approved list ,I know it says at Thermaltakes site it`s recommended up to 1.5ghz but that cooler is not a good one overall, there are lots of better heatsinks you can buy,so you could try a SK6 or Taisol CGK 760092 heatsink, you need to rule out it`s a temp problem first, without posting your temps etc we are in the dark.

Btw double check the heatsink is seated right.

And don't think the heat factor isn't that critical!! With improper cooling, it only takes seconds to overheat these chips.........almost milliseconds........

Didn't that chip come with a 'stock' hsf?.........My 1 gig tbird and xp 1700+ came with identical hsf's, and they work fine..........42C on the xp.

Don't even touch the on button with 'no' cooling.........!! .........Ol'Ben

BTW> I have the same board, v 1.0, bios 64, running an xp 1700+(locked..for now)

i am sure the heatsink is seated right cuz i tried to move it around and it was stable fixed. also i dont have the Original HSF 🙁 i think i have to go for an SK-6? also i just flashed the bios from the latest bios but i cant tell what MOBO version is.

Problem exists between keyboard and chair.

Start readin' them manuals.
A 1.4 Tbird does not use a 100MHz FSB. It uses 133. Surely your motherboard has some "autodetect" options on it? Instead of using all your own wacky settings?

The guys are right you did try the 10.5x133FSB setting? Since this is the right setting for the T-bird 1.4ghz.
