I just bought a brand new case from NewEgg.

I transferred the old system (MoBo + HDD +All Cards ) into the new case.

I boot up...and the board LED's are indicating a CPU failure.

A CPU FAILURE !!! ARGH !

I must have damaged the motherboard on transfer.

check to make sure you didnt ground anything thats not supposed to be grounded, remove the cpu and reseat it

MoBo under warranty? 😉

Seriously though, did you drop or bang the MB on anything while you moved it? Were you grounded, or is there a possibility of static shock from the move?

It CAN'T be the CPU. I didnt touch the thing. Has to be the MoBo .... right ?

Not necessarily. Like the other guy said, reseat absolutely everything. Make sure you have all the copper spacers needed. Make sure no part of the motherboard is touching the case. Still doesn't work, transfer back to old case to verify dead hardware.

Did you leave the heatsink on? What kind of CPU? Maybe while you were moving the motherboard, the weight of the heatsink/fan damaged the cpu.

Try booting with the cpu and what the code says. Then try with other things like taking out ram and see if the motherboard shows the correct code.

I put it back in the old case...still fails to boot with the LED's indicating CPU failure.

there is a copper spacer for every available hole on the MoBo

I did leave the HeatSink on...but it isn't that heavy, and it is a Socket A

The big question is ...

Do I replace the MoBo or Chip or both ?

Which first ?

Any good combo deals out there ?

Do this, check to make sure you are not grounding the motherboard. Then, put only the essential items that make the computer run together. Motherboard, ram, cpu, video card. See if it boots up.

Did it...twice....still get CPU FAILURE led's from the board.

I guess I am losing my skills. Back when I was a PC tech I was great at this stuff. Years of System's Administration began to deaden my skills....and now that I am a network engineer I don't ever have to work on this crap.

I hate PC tech crap !!!
