I would rather get beaten with a Louisville Slugger than have a single canker sore. I have one right now I can hardly brush my teeth near it because it is pure pain. I also found out that the cause is sort of unknown, and there really isn't a treatment, except time. Have you guys found any remedies or ways to prevent them?

You have herpes and will soon die, I'm sorry.

;)

L-lysine is supposed to help, but I've never had anything actually get rid of them or prevent them. I've got them since I was a kid and still get them every so often.

yep... two things can help clean then up, which allows them to heal:

swig some warm super-saturated salt water, or swig some pepto bismol. Pepto helps remove acid that may be digging further, and salt water just pretty much sterilizes the wound, and helps dig into the crevices, potentially helping remove the top layer of the wounded tissue?

Breaking into the local sewage plant at night to go skinny dipping is also a big no-no, as is flossing with autopsy waste.

I don't know how it works, but it turned healing time from over a week into a few days.

I don't get them often, but I will get them when I do something stupid like biting my lip accidentally. The things hurt like a bitch and make eating certain foods a real pain. Ketchup especially.

Yep. Works perfectly. Also, I've found that cutting artifical sugar and acidic out of your diet helps a lot.

My prevention has been: Don't bite myself. Of course, it doesn't always work. And the fun part is, once I bite one spot, it swells up, usually causing it to get bitten a few more times. If it happens to be right at my canine teeth, I'll usually draw blood. I did once bit the edge of my tongue hard enough that my teeth contacted each other - punched a hole clean through it.
It seriously sucked when I had braces. For a few weeks, I basically had two continuous ulcers running the length ofthe braces, one on the top, one on the bottom. That, combined with the dull headache caused by the stress on my teeth from the braces themselves, just made for a pretty miserable time.

I have yet to find anything that definitely helped get rid of them or prevent them. Salt water, various mouthwashes, peroxide, pharmaceuticals meant to take care of them, nothing did anything, except make the things hurt like crazy. Their usual life span is about two weeks, and I just use Orajel - like most such products, it's just a benzocaine-based anesthetic.

Maybe there's some hereditary component to it, too. My dad got these things all the time. His cure - age. It was sometime around when he turned 40, they almost entirely stopped. No idea why. So, if this is all accurate, I will have acne (from my mom's side) and ulcers until I'm 40. Yay.

very much so... i don't nearly as many canker sores these days as I did during high school, where 3-4 cans could be close to average or just below average daily consumption of that heavenly syrup. :D (needs to be missing a tooth in that emoticon. that would be brilliant!) But seriously, yea I drank and ate crap during high school, my stomach went from pretty much flat to a little bulge, let myself get out of shape.. still workin on gettin rid of that pudge, all the situps don't seem to be workin, though I don't eat that well still. Had canker sores all the damned time. Not much anymore. :)

For prevention try switching to a toothpaste that doesn't contain SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate).
SLS is known to promote canker sores in some people. I had a patient who was getting frequent canker sores and I suggested he switch toothpastes and it worked for him.

Rembrandt and Tom's of Maine both make SLS free toothpastes.

My doctor said it was from stress, and taking B-12 would prevent them. It worked, but the pills are huge and it makes your piss glow in the dark yellow. (Not literally, but it's really really bright!)

Wrong target for your outrage, El Stupido. Apparently, you couldn't tell an obvious joke if it reared up and bit you in the ass. Reading comprehension ftw, legolad.

Like others here, I get them when I bite the inside of my cheek. Most often I do it with my canines near the edge of my lip. After figuring this out, I'm much more aware of where and when I bite, and don't get them nearly as often. The advice about swigging warm salt water does help a lot. You can also get a prescription medicine from your dentist, although I've never used it.

Prevention: Don't eat things like potato chips because the sharp edges can puncture the gumline and then leads to canker sores. Remedies = Lidocane. Smear that stuff on, and go about your normal daily life. Although too much lidocane, and you be drooling all over the place, so just be aware of that.

This is what did it for me. I switched to a non sls toothpaste and after that I rarely got them anymore. What's odd though is after I moved in with my then girlfriend (now wife) I started using the same Colgate toothpaste as her, and I still rarely get them, but that toothpaste has sls. I figured my days of getting them from sls were over so when some aqua fresh was on sale I bought that and within a week I got a canker sore. I switched back to the colgate and still rarely get them. I don't know what it is about the colgate since it has sls.

What sucks is, if I bite the inside of my mouth regardless of what kind of toothpaste I use it will turn into a canker sore guaranteed.

How do I know if my toothpaste is SLS free? What brands do you recommend?

I used to use some oralb mouthwash called amosan that would clear up canker sores very fast. I don't know if they still make it though.
