I'm just talking to my friend (whose also Chinese, like me), and he keeps going on and on about how foreign cell phones are so far ahead of the US market. He keeps sending me these links showing me all these cell phones that can play TV, have a 3 megapixel camera, etc.

Well, this got me thinking about my experiences in Asia.

The last time I went to China was exactly one year ago. When I was there, I went to a big shopping mall selling all sorts of computer equipment. Walking through the mall, I saw a mom holding up her son so he could urinate into a trash can right beside the escalators. I thought to myself....wow, until China can realize that sh!t like that needs to stop and people become more considerate of others, they will never advance as a society.

EDIT: Ok, so I might get flamed for this. I realize that, so go ahead.

My cell phone can play TV. It's not a 3 MP camera... but then again, neither is my camera.

Take a crappy pic of yourslf playing golf with your non-3MP camera phone. E-mail the pic to your friend from your phone. See if it passes through the chinese internet filters. If it does, send another pic of you pointing and laughing at your friend. If it gets blocked, e-mail him a detailed description of what you tried to send him and make fun of him for living in a communist paradise. And, of course, congratulate him on having a better phone 😛

No, it's just something that I've noticed every time I go back. This was the incident that was the straw that broke the camel's back, as it were, and really made me think about it.

I suppose it might be better in huge cities like Shanghai and Beijing that have more of an international presence. But still, Beijing is a city that needs to give their citizens lessons in decorum to prepare for the 2008 Olympics.

Sad. Foreign cell phones are ahead of the US market because here in the US people don't care about cell phones enough that they want RaZrs. It's sickening. It's like wanting Pentium 4 Prescotts. Get with the flow. If you think your Moto RaZr kicks ass, that's nearly 3 years old technology you're holding.

Anyways, you need to chill. Don't bash your own culture. If you're not fobby, that's great. Everyone's different.
 
China will never advance as a society? I don't know lately they seem to be doing more advancing than any one else.. especially economically.

One time during bandcamp, in Downtown San Francisco, I saw this homeless man defecate on himself in front of tourists that were waiting for the Cable Car and I thought to myself, "How can this national ever advance as a society?"

And that man was Ben Bang Long.
 
China is well on there way to becoming our superiors, even if the citizens don't have any liberty. All hail the Chinese overlords!

Could be worse, I could have crapped on the basketball court! I was watching the Clippers-Rockets game last night and the commentatory said when he was in college, one of his teammate ate ice cream and nachos before the game and he crapped in his shorts and brown stuff was dripping down his socks during the game. He ran back to the locker foot and they played 5 on 4. The coach benched him for the rest of the season.
