I hate alternate arrangements of the US national anthem

Jennifer Hudson is an amazing singer and she did a pretty good job during the supebowl but am I the only one that really wished she would have just sang the national anthem in its original arrangement?

What do you mean original arrangement? She didn't change the words did she? There was no original recording of it so I'm not sure how it was originally supposed to be sung. Does anyone? It's words on paper with music to go behind it. I think outside of Mariah she did about the best rendition ever. Since there was no audio recording equipment back when it was originally written I don't think anyone can do more but guess how it was supposed to be sung. But then again I find what most people consider to be a "traditional" rendition to be boring as shit. Jen didn't try to make it her own song but she did add some soul to it.

Songs that have no original recording and only written words to go off of have to be interrupted by whoever is singing it. Who's to say what's true to the original and what's not?
She sounded wonderful to me.

It sounded more like a show tune than the national anthem. Coming from a wind ensemble background, I thought it was a terrible arrangement.

As someone who often owns two or three recordings of the same piece of music to hear different interpretations, I have no problem with singers interpreting the national anthem. That isn't to say all of those interpretations are good (though I didn't have any problems with the singing yesterday), but if everyone sang it the same way, it just wouldn't be interesting to listen to.

You're quibbling over semantics. When I say arrangement I mean the way the notes are arranged, not the lyrics. There's an official, and common, way to do it. When the national anthem is being played during official political events or during the olympics there isn't a new re-interpretation everytime. There's the classic arrangement.

I wouldn't agree with that. I've heard quite a few, probably more like MANY, different ways of people singing it. Most suck when they try to show off though. arrangement is a terrible word to use though

No 2 people sing the same, I just watched 10 different people singing it on Youtube and each one did it their own way. If there was one correct way to sing it, they should find the one person who sings it that way and have them be the only person to sing it every year at the Super Bowl.

Why? THat's the proper term in music when the same song is composed w/ a different scale or w/ added embelishments.

The National Anthem should not be "hip-i-fied" in the slightest.

It's original music is well documented, and no one, not Jose Feliciano, not Jennifer Hudson, not Whiney Houston should be allowed to modify it from its orginal.

When they do, they should be beaten with a bat...severely on and about the head.

You want to sing hip songs? Fine. Leave the Star-Spangled Banner the fuck alone.

You do realize that FSK just used his poem on top of a British drinking song...right?

The original is a poem set to a well known (at the time) British drinking song and was altered and adapted by Key (original author) even in his original hand written drafts. It has been altered and edited throughout most of its history. It even has a third verse that is regularly dropped in the typical modern renditions because it includes a bit to much anti-British sentiment for our modern alliances (see below).

Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution
No refuge could save the hireling & slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave

Messing with The Star-Spangled Banner is very American.

Granted, most people seem to add nothing to it when they do mess with it. 🙁

EDIT: It looks like my history lesson is just a tad late. 😱

to add on to what a few others have mentioned. It's not even 100% known if it was written to the key of Adams and Liberty. But Keys NEVER said it was even supposed to be a song. So for you to bitch about people incorrectly singing a song that was never supposed to be more than a poem is fucking retarded. Basically down the line it was changed into a song. Much like the Bible isn't really the original Bible so people who preach their Bible is the right Bible kill me.

Keys wrote the words and never mentioned shit about music behind it, so by your logic anyone singing it is doing is wrong, as poems aren't sung.

good day to you...

I, and I'm sure many others, can read that and know exactly how it sounds without hearing it. And the most common arrangement is still slightly different for the original drinking song.

Couldn't agree more OP. I actually told one one of my buddies the same thing right when it was over. You don't need to spice up the national anthem... leave it be.

I saw her come out, listened to the first couple of bars, then thought I'd be in for a waste of the next 10 minutes of my life so I went and got a beer and started making dinner.
