In Vegas last June--pre-Garnett, pre-Allen. I bought a Celtics NBA championship ticket at 275 to 1.

It'll be funding the next trip to Vegas. Hooray!

Has anyone hit similarly long futures bets? This is the first time in my lifetime in a major sport that a team that was such a longshot 12 months before ended up winning the championship (professionally, at least).

probably put down $10 so won like $2750. Not bad (incredible really) but think of if he had put down $100?

A buddy of mine told me this guy we know put down something like 3 or 5 grand at the beginning of the season on the celtics and was up 60 grand plus another 20 if they won the finals, which they did.

I have no clue if those numbers are accurate though.

That's incredible, who'd have thought the team favored to win the lottery for this past year's draft would end up winning the finals?

I wonder what the odds of a Celtics win over the Lakers with an unhappy Kobe demanding to be traded would've been after the finals last year.

You've got the number right. I wish I had put down $100! (I probably would have hedged before now, though!)

Yeah, anyone want to put the odds on the Knicks making a similar turnaround? :p

I actually bought it intending to give it as a gift to my friend who's from Boston. After they made the trades, I decided I wasn't going to be THAT generous and gave him something else instead ;P

I remember reading a story about a guy who put a few bucks down on the Tigers in 06 and would have won 90 grand had they won the World Series. The house offered him a 40k buyout before the WS, too bad he didn't take it. :(

That's awesome. Though I think you're kind of an a-hole for not giving it to your friend. That was kinda the point, no - a gag gift that had the potential to be a great gift?

When I arrived in Las Vegas, a local casino sent me a welcome package that included a free $10 sports ticket.

Went down to the book window and put the bet on the Patriots to win a playoff game.
The bookie wanted me to play the odd line; but I had no idea what he was talking about - Pats to win.

And they did - being underdogs, they paid about 14/10.

The next three games, the Pats were the underdogs - I kept rolling the payoff over.
Ended up with about $400 and the Pats won their first SuperBowl.

It was not my $$ to begin with.
