I had surgery this morning - with after pic: updated 9-18-10

For those of you who remember my >.o or o.< eyes - I had strabismus surgery today..started shortly before 10am and wrapped up around 11am. I remember being wheeled into the OR, but I don't remember falling asleep..or anything until I woke up in the post-op room.

It came out pretty well - can't really open my eyes both all the way easily...my left one had two muscles sewn and is pretty scratchy, plus they dilated the hell out of my pupils so everything is effing bright. But I am straight!

Feeling much better...very little soreness. Double vision for stuff up close, but with glasses it's not bad and for far-out stuff, it's gone. Overall I am very happy.

Here's a photo from today:

And an old before photo, for another reference:

One of my friends has that (strabismus), and you can never tell who or what the hell he's looking at 🙂.

Congrats! It must feel good knowing you're not cross eyed anymore.
I imagine it has been a major issue for you for years.

Well, it did cause the wrong person to answer questions if I was talking to a group of people..which was annoying. 😛

Does the world look different for you now (if you still can't tell yet I'd be curious to know when you're all healed up)? How long was that eye "messed up?" Since birth?

But, now you'll lose the "weird in a very intimidating" factor you must have had with perps!

Your law enforcement career just hit a snag 🙁

does your mind have to do a lot of re-adjusting / re-learning? or is everything pretty normal?

Pretty normal so far, but I am only using one eye - have a cold compress on the other at the moment. I may have slight double vision at times until my brain adjusts, but it is very good at blocking out double vision from one eye already (from when they turned in) so I don't expect it to be a problem (and neither does the doc).

Looks pretty good for so soon out of surgery. Have to wear dark shades to protect the eye at all?

Not now, no..but it's bright outside and when I was out there, the world looked like I had no sunglasses on and I did. Dilation was pretty extreme.

Yep, since birth..26+ years. Everything pretty much looks the same, but I am not wearing a contact in that eye (can't for about 2 weeks). I will switch to glasses after the stitches heal up a bit.

They don't expect me to get depth perception, as the brain cells that take care of that usually form when you're very young so mine probably didn't. I am willing to try to prove them wrong, though. 😉

lmao...'which one of us is he watching???' 'I can't tell, man! Don't move!'

I have had four limited success surgeries for my amblyopia when I was younger. Not terribly fun.

You can only tell when I'm tired now, though. But I still only focus out of one eye at a time(the other just adds a bit of peripheral vision).

Whoa!!! Huge improvement!
Do these type of surgeries usually last a lifetime, or do you need follow-up surgeries?

Hopefully it'll last...with kids, the brain tends to lock on to the eyes and make sure they stay lined up, but since that part of my brain may have not developed, I'm not sure how that's going to play out.
