I am moving my computer NightCrawler (see sig) to an Opt 165. I am slowly over cloacking the CPU and currently sits at 250x9 or 2.25 Ghz. Using the stock cooler, which is a 4 heat-pipe design cooler.

So now to interesting situation....

Case Temp: 40C
OC Idle Temp: 41C (or +1 over ambient)
100% Load Temp after 2 hours of Prime95: 52C (or +12 over ambient)

I went to bed with Prime95 running over night and i wake up the next morning and i get these temps...

Case Temp:37C
Load Temp: 54C (or +17C over ambient)
after cool down of 20 minutes: 38C (or +1C over ambient)

So my question is, what caused the load temp to go from +12 to +17 in the six hours that i was asleep? The case temp went down, meaning that the CPU temp should have gone, also; but instead went up!

I have stopped OC'ing the chip for the time being because of this, but i am most likely going to try 275x9 tonight and let it run over night with that; but if the temps are going to weird like this i am not going to.

Any ideas?

TIA

It's known that running Prime95, will cause different load temps depending on which particular test Prime95 is running. There was a heatsink review that showed a graph over time of temps over a 24h period running Prime95, and it clearly showed (for each heatsink) a distinctive graph.

small FFTs vs large FFTs.

Small FFT's will stress the CPU more and therefore cause higher load temps then large FFT's which also test RAM.

Well over time the load temp will build up in the case. IE the metal will get a bit warmer and it will take more time to dissipate the heat, so.... heat builds up in the case. Only way to really fix that is to get a HSF that blows the heat out the back or top of the case.

Well, that wouldn't make sense; the case temp went down (40C to 37C); so the heat in the case actually went down over night.

I'm using the one labeled 'Max Heat, No RAM' in Prime95.

Either way, i watched it again over the weekend and it turns out that the heatsink/fan is temperature controlled based off the case temp not the cpu temp. So as the case temp went from 36C to 40C, the rpm's on the heatsink went from 1500 rpm to 4000 rpm. The matched the drop in temp from 57C to 53C. Interesting that the 'core' temp in SpeedFan was constant at 50C throughout the entire test period.

what should i name my rig?

i can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not, but i am going to chose to believe that you are not; So, with that in mind, what do you like? You should name it accordingly. I have named all my computers after X-men characters; It was sad but so far i had to retire Juggernaut (Linux Dell I8200 laptop), Rogue (a gateway laptop, that i returned), and ArchAngel (an old Athlon XP machine that Wolverine replaced). My next build is going to be named 'Brainiac'. Not really an X-men character, but a comic character non-the-less. Also, i couldn't find something equalivent in the X-men universe. Since my next machine is probably going to be either a Q6600 or an E6650 with 2 GB RAM, i felt that name was proper.

My brother chose just fictional characters to name his computers, Optimus Prime and Silver Surfer.
