I had a Canon A650IS, what is the best way to go at $300 or so?

I was robbed on Thursday, my A650IS was stolen. I bought it at $283...what is the best replacement in that size or smaller (or just slightly bigger) of equal or better quality?

Thanks

I feel for you, my car was robbed a few weeks back and my GPS, sunglasses, cell phone and a friends video game were stolen.

Was there anything that you would want this new camera to do differently compared to your old camera?

With the G11 coming out, I bet you can pick up a used G10 for that much or less.

I am targeting the G series actually...the big difference to me at the time was the G didn't have a flipping screen. I sort of like that option.

Canon really messed up the A series since.

As a long-time Canon fan, I would suggest you'd go for either SX10 or, if you want to be able to film in 720p, a SX20.

The Powershot S cameras got phenomenal zooms with IS, and beautiful video with STEREO sound. As long as you don't go over ISO 400, you're sitting pretty, otherwise you DO need to run the pix through a de-noiser. The noise is about the only thing that drags this camera series down, and about the only reason why the G series comes on top.

The Gs are great, don't get me wrong, but the Powershots S get a lot more zoom and better macro, and I like the quality of the video. Plus, to be honest, the manual controls on the S series is just as comprehensive, even if it's slightly less easy to access. Plus, as you said it yourself, you just can't beat the versatility and usefulness of an articulated screen... My DSLR aside, I don't think I'd ever go back to a "regular" fixed-screen digicam.

I like those esp that they use AA's, however at about another 1" on all the dimensions of my A650IS; it's entering the more difficult to always have around.

I am debating that though anyway as my wife loves the elphs...the S90 powershot looks interesting too. She loved her SD450 and it was lightyears ahead of her Nikon Coolpix 3500. She usually always has her camera and with my 3.2MP camera phone now I usually am not without one either. I usually carry my A650IS in a Lowepro AW50 anyway when traveling as rain and the like happen.

That stereo video is interesting. I will check into them more and see if it may be worth the extra formfactor.

It's about an 1" all the way around...25-30% larger than my a650is...I haven't held a S series yet. The new G11 has a flip screen and is 1.90" h x 3.00" w x 4.40"...but a freaking proprietary battery pack. I usually carry about 4 sets of AA's with me and I still have had to buy batteries at times.

I loved my a650IS...I wish it had the build quality of my A620 but the IS more than made up for it.

My wifes camera replacement is going to be harder...most of the newest elphs aren't very eplh-like.
