Kind of strange that there was no news coming out about the impending criminal charges, but I guess that after the other guy was accused and that whole circus, they must be a little gun shy. I don't imagine if he was innocent that he would have commited suicide........

Good. I hope there's some clue as to why he did it - assuming he really did. The bastard that did should be tortured - since he tortured us right after 9/11.

The revelation of deep-throat (nixon era) turned out to be anti-climatic. I was stunned that nobody cared anymore since it was on everyone's mind for years. I guess we know why history keeps repeating.

he Times, quoting an unidentified colleague, said the scientist had taken a massive dose of a prescription Tylenol mixed with codeine

Shame. I was hoping he'd use anthrax on himself. In either case, I hope it was painful.
Thumbs up for FBI for being persistent and pursuing this case for many years.

"Top U.S. biodefense researcher" suicided. Oh the 9/11 conspiracy theorists will go nuts with this one.

I have to say every time I hear the term deep-throat, Nixon era is just the last damn thing I think of.

i just wonder what those israeli mossad boys were up to after they got caught celebrating when the towers were burning. then the fbi checked there base of operation and allegedly found some anthrax.

"According to several Weehawken
neighbors of the Urban Moving Systems warehouse, the FBI, upon searching the the warehouse, discovered fertilizer, other chemicals for making explosives, pipes, caps, and traces of
anthrax. After anthrax was discovered, investigators wearing hazardous material suits went through the warehouse."

It would be interesting to hear why he did it for sure.

What is more interesting was the total "rush to judgement" by Bush to claim Saddam did it. If you look at all the articles from back then, it was all "saddam did it", "anthrax linked to saddam". Bush once again lied his ass off about linking Saddam to this as another excuse to invade.

And then the DoJ leaked another innocent scientists name, and he only just recently finally cleared his name and won a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the DoJ for ruining his life. Boy our DoJ sure is good huh? Targeted and leaked the wrong person for years, and didn't mind the wrong linkage of Saddam to the attack.

From another AP news story:
Ivins was "hounded" by aggressive FBI agents who raided his home twice, said Dr. W. Russell Byrne, a colleague who worked in the bacteriology division of the Fort Detrick research facility for 15 years. Byrne said Ivins was forcefully removed from his job by local police recently because of fears that he had become a danger to himself or others. The investigation led to Ivins being hospitalized for depression earlier this month, Byrne said.

He said he does not believe Ivins was behind the anthrax attacks.

He was reported to be severly depressed and talking about suicide to a therapist. The fact that he was being accused may have pushed him over the edge of depression even if he was completely innocent.

We need to hear the evidence that he send the anthrax before jumping to a conclusion.

People commit suicide because they are seriously ill. The fact that they commit suicide does not mean that they were guilty of other crimes.

i thought this guy was a person of interest considering:

The Hartford Courant newspaper ran a series of articles in December 2001 and January 2002 which discussed Dr. Zack as a "person of interest" in the 2001 anthrax attacks in the US, his relationship with Dr. Marian K. Rippy, and their harassment of Dr. Ayaad Assaad at USAMRIID in 1991. [1] After Zack had been fired from Fort Detrick, a surveillance camera recorded him being let in at 8:40 p.m. on Jan. 23, 1992, apparently by Dr. Marian Rippy.[2] Salon magazine ran a story by Laura Rozen on January 26, 2002, which reported that Zack was among those: "eager to continue working on projects USAMRIID said they should stop. What followed, the documents reveal, were scientists sneaking into the Army biowarfare lab to work on pet projects after-hours and on weekends, former workers like Zack, who left in 1991, still being let in to do lab work, pressure applied to technicians to help out, documents going missing, and deliberate mislabeling of specimens among other efforts to hide unsanctioned lab work."[3]
Zack left Fort Detrick in December 1991, after a controversy over allegations of unprofessional behavior by Zack, Rippy, Brown and others who worked in the pathology division. They had formed a clique that was accused of harassing the Egyptian-born Assaad, who later sued the Army, claiming discrimination.

Assaad said he had believed the harassment was behind him until last October, until after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

He said that is when the FBI contacted him, saying someone had mailed an anonymous letter - a few days before the existence of anthrax-laced mail became known - naming Assaad as a potential bioterrorist. FBI agents decided the note was a hoax after interviewing Assaad.

But Assaad said he believes the note's timing makes the author a suspect in the anthrax attacks, and he is convinced that details of his work contained in the letter mean the author must be a former Fort Detrick colleague.

Lt. Col. Philip Zack, who, like Hatfill, also had access to a well-equipped laboratory with lax security. Zack, moreover, actually worked with military-grade anthrax at Fort Detrick.

like many others have said, this story sounds strange.

Criminal trials can be emotionally stressful for people regardless of whether they are guilty or innocent. With the prime suspect dead, there will be no trial, and hence, no search for truth.

I'll go on record saying I think they likely have found the right person. I'll stop short of saying it's more certain than that, but I think they have found him.

it's a setup. could the "war-mongers" have set up the anthrax scare just to pin iraq as the culprit?

Much more important than the general attempt to link the anthrax to Islamic terrorists, there was a specific intent -- indispensably aided by ABC News -- to link the anthrax attacks to Iraq and Saddam Hussein. In my view, and I've written about this several times and in great detail to no avail, the role played by ABC News in this episode is the single greatest, unresolved media scandal of this decade. News of Ivins' suicide, which means (presumably) that the anthrax attacks originated from Ft. Detrick, adds critical new facts and heightens how scandalous ABC News' conduct continues to be in this matter.

During the last week of October, 2001, ABC News, led by Brian Ross, continuously trumpeted the claim as their top news story that government tests conducted on the anthrax -- tests conducted at Ft. Detrick -- revealed that the anthrax sent to Daschele contained the chemical additive known as bentonite. ABC News, including Peter Jennings, repeatedly claimed that the presence of bentonite in the anthrax was compelling evidence that Iraq was responsible for the attacks, since -- as ABC variously claimed -- bentonite "is a trademark of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's biological weapons program" and "only one country, Iraq, has used bentonite to produce biological weapons."

Given the adminstration's history of continual lying, other conspiracy theories can't be completely dismissed, but "likely" is about as close as we're going to get to any certain conclusion.

One disturbing element is, on October 18, 2001, on David Letterman's show John McCain said that the anthrax "may have" come from Iraq. This was BEFORE the Bushies started their war, and he raised the issue as a possible excuse for starting it.

LETTERMAN: How are things going in Afghanistan now?

MCCAIN: I think we're doing fine...
.
.
.
I think we'll do fine. The second phase - if I could just make one, very quickly - the second phase is Iraq. There is some indication, and I don't have the conclusions, but some of this anthrax may - and I emphasize may - have come from Iraq.

LETTERMAN: Oh is that right?

MCCAIN: If that should be the case, that's when some tough decisions are gonna have to be made.

McCain says he knows how to win wars. This suggests he tries to keep in practice by starting them. It also lends credence to conspiracy theorists who suggest Ivins's suicide is part of an adminstration coverup or part of a larger plot to push the nation toward their eventual war in Iraq.
