I have a desktop built by a local shop that I now cannot contact for help.
Windows 7, ASUS motherboard, with this in the specs on the receipt:
"Built-in HD Sound". Control Panel called it "VIA High Definition Audio"
It has been working fine until several days ago, when it started not working. I had to restart the machine to get it to work, then after a while it would stop working again. So I had to restart etc etc
I looked on google and saw a variety of people saying they had similar problem, and one said "just uninstall and reinstall the driver".
OK, that sounded easy. So I went to Dev Mgr and uninstalled it, not knowing it would then disappear from Dev Mgr and Sound. I thought I would just have to select it and say "Install driver" or something and Windows would find it for me. Nope.
So I have tried a handful of drivers off the web, a couple from VIA, and one from Softpedia. None of them make it work. But the last one, from Softpedia, at least it made a noise during reboot. The speakers "came alive" - I pulled the plug and wiggled it and got static but by the time full Windows was up, there was nothing
Since I dont have a disk to reinstall from, what can I do from here? I guess I could go buy a new sound card, presuming the mobo has a slot for it. Or is the original driver still on the hard drive somewhere? Does uninstalling completely remove the driver files?
You can see I know some but not enough to really know what I'm doing
Thanks

You can go the motherboard manufacturer's website, and download the correct audio driver.

Just look at your motherboard and it will have the model number on it. You need that so you can get the correct driver.

AHA! Thanks, I didnt think of the obvious - as it was a custom built box, I looked back in my files and found the ASUS disk that came with it, and there was the driver. It works!

Learn something new every day! Even if I shoulda known from the start.

Thanks!
