So I am getting my mail and its about new games, Decent 2 & 3, earth worm Jim, and redneck racing for example.

I own these games, they are rather old, but I cant play them anymore due to my computer being a xp driven rig, or they just will not work at all, even if I try to trick them into thinking they are running on win 95 or 98se.

So my bitch is this, Gametap and the makers have to come together to make the game work if they are to put it on the game list. Which means they are working with the game makers so they can get around the protection so gt customers will not get the "insert correct cd" message, and most of all be able to get the game to play right on a xp or vista driven rig. So my big bitch is why they hell are the updating the games for gametap, but not us who still own the damn game so we can play them without having to go though GT to do so??

I mean I love gametap, had it for over a year now, will never get rid of it, but if they are able to make these games run on a xp or vista rig, then why is the game makers not releasing a fix for those who own the cd still but had to put it up, or throw away, because they dont work at all without a update, which wont happen because they are too old, but they dont seem to mind to update the game for gametap so it can be played thats way.

I feel left out, hurt, and have a bunch of games as well that are on gametap and work, without being 100x faster when I try to play them, decent 2 is one of those game that play with extra speed on my system, and I feel crushed when I see these games come up on game tap, but I check for a update so I can install my copy, and I get nothing.

Anyway, there it is, sooooo damn wrong, your forced into keeping gametap now, if you like to play your old games again, because the moment you drop GT, even if you own the game, you cant just install it and play, for your not given the same patch to do so on your own.

No one is stopping you from keeping an old PC around to play the old games on. Or run virtual machines. Or dual boot.

The boards I use, MSI 939, say they are not compatible with 98, and the older rigs I do have with old graphics in them are too old to play some of the old games that do not run on xp, so I dont see why, since I did buy these games, if they can update for gametap why it would hurt them to put out a patch for the masses, for then they will sell more games for those who gave up long time ago and threw them away.

They would make money on a patch they developed, and got money for from game tap, to put it out for all to get, update the game they own, or have to go out and buy again because it will now work on a xp or vista rig.

No one here who claims they are a gamer would take advantage of this if they were able to pull their old games out of the closet and get to play again. There is a huge, money vault right there waiting to be opened to make all the old games work. They will resell to those who had it before, or people will buy to put on their kids computers toplay, the end is limitless for something already been developed, they have no money really in anymore, to reissue.

How many times has sonic been redone for different platforms and sell like hot cakes? The ability to play psx games on a ps2, or xbox games on a 360, why not take that to PC making all win 95 and 98 games play now on vista and xp, they would literally be making bank and profits would soar, if they would just take the patches they have already made for gametap, and re-release the games they made with the patch in them, bam, Money for them, and a working game I been holding onto for over 10 years I can play again.

GameTap is paying for the changes, it doesn't make business sense for them to let the publishers share them with you for free.

Would you pay, say, $5 a game to get these patches for non-GameTap use?

You need to complain to the publishers not Gametap.
Gametap is providing a service totally separate from the service you are supposed to get from a publisher when you buy their title.

I don't think its so much that Gametap does not want the original purchasers of the games to be able to play them now without Gametap, its a lot more complicated than that.
Lots of the games on Gametap no longer even have web sites for the game.
Some of them don't even have publishers that still exist.
Who will provide support for the new patches ? Gametap ?

I recall reading on gamedev that Gametap is often purchasing the rights to distribute the games, with most publishers going "Here is the source code, good luck "!

Its like some of the console games they offer, old genesis, saturn, etc titles, most of them Gametap had to create their own emulator to run the titles and even then the support from the publisher was lacking.

Its not like Gametap is talking to publishers who are saying "Lets bring back the development team and make this game run great on the current hardware", often its " Gametap - here is the game, good luck"!

Developers are not going waste time making patches for old games to run on new operating systems when they can be putting that effort into making a new title which will make them a much much larger amount of money. It would be a waste. There are a myriad of options that you can use to get these games running - dual boot, virtual machines, DosBox, buying an older PC for these specific titles, etc. Honestly, I find your language quite humorous using words such as "left out", "hurt", and "crushed" to describe the fact that you can't get some older games running on your new OS.
