I Got the SETI Smackdown....

BadThad

Lifer
Well, the horrible has happened. To make a long story short, I was told to remove SETI from ALL work PC's today. It only took one a$$hole to ruin it for me.

Merry Christmas from my employer!....bla!

badthad: Sorry to hear the bad news. Not that it matters but what was the reason for this person's dislike of SETI?

Rob

Even though you did pass me, it's a still a bummer to hear that, since it was helping out the team. 🙁

On a positive note, my boss gave me permission to load up SETI on the machines at my work until Monday evening.. so I managed to get the CLI 3.0 client on 24 PCs, with the slowest being a P2-350. Granted, this is only a 3-day run, but at least the team will benefit from every work unit I do get during this time! 🙂

Hey Badthad! Did you read that recent post about a certain telephone prank? Possibly this is a time to put it to good use!? 😉

Thar really sucks, Badthad! 🙁

So many work groups have been lost due to a single loser/tosser that doesn't have a clue. :|

No freaking reason for people like that. Maybe their computer will mysteriously crash?:Q

arrgggg...MAN, this is painful! Just removed it from a bomb-load of users PC's. I'm gonna start crying any moment, LOL.

Robor - Well, it essentially boils down to 1 MIS guy. He was going around updating some network settings after hours and noticed all the PC's with user "seti" logged in and seti driver running. He is a major paranoid skitzo and got all worked up about security and running non-biz apps on PC's. I didn't get into trouble or anything, but he worked my boss over since he's the one that officially gave me permission. Well, my boss got paranoid and told me to start removing before they have a chance to fk with us. 🙁

I'm gonna keep a few PC's running it, fk 'em. I have 3 in our analytical lab (667, 533, & P2-450) that don't have specific users assigned to them, so they are low risk if the prickyness continues. Also salvaged a P3-500, that user left the company so I just kept him logged in...LMAO, let's see them reprimand him! HA I'm also gonna chance it with my personal P3-500.

Funny thing is, I'm being singled out. I know 2 other users that run it (not part of my herd or TA) and one is even in MIS! Pure political BS. I fought and lost. 🙁

NWM

A little good news 🙂

Badthad
MIS??
Mind you don't get into trouble for the remaining ones.🙁
At least you have something left 🙂

badthad: That totally sucks. I work in MIS so I can relate to them monitoring the programs that users put on the systems. Many times they do cause problems, contain viruses, or are unlicensed. That said, I've never had a SETI client related problem at work. The only drawback I've found when running SETI on a PC is that it can't be defragged. That said, our AntiVirus software, McAfee VirusScan, causes the same problem!

Sometimes MIS guys can be control freaks. I don't know this guy but it sounds like he just got pi$$ed that you installed software without his knowledge. Maybe if you explain the details and assure him that the client causes no problems (other than the defrag issue) he'd be willing to let you run the client. Give it a try. Even if he only lets you run it on off hours it would give you 1/2 or 2/3 of your production back.

If he doesn't listen to you or believe you point him to the Distributed Computing forum. Just make sure you edit your post. 😉 We'll back you up. I'm sure everyone here would be willing to answer any questions he has.

Good luck and Happy Holidays!

Rob
