How is the room in that?

I'm seriously considering a Protege5 (or waiting for the new Mazda 3) but need to be sure an adult can actually sit in the rear seat. And, how much room behind the seat in the hatch area?

Oh...and how is the noise? Is it buzzy/vibrations?

Congrats! That's a good deal on a practical little car, especially if you got it FULLY loaded (leather, moonroof, cd changer, alarm, etc.). :)

well, im 5'10, weight about 150. I fit in the back seat just fine, its actually roomy. If your 6 feet+ tall, most cars arent going to be too comfortable in the back seat, no matter what car it is. But it is roomy imo. Its very smooth and quiet, although i have read that if you have a sunroof and have it open, it makes a windy sound only because of the roof rack. But thats something you cant stop, wind blowing on a roof rack will always make noise. Removing the roof rack is really easy anyway, so its more then fixable. I beleive its a great car at a GREAT price. Id get one if i were you!

Well, maybe i overexaggerated when i said fully loaded. ive been driving cars without power anything for about 3 years. my car has power everything, cd player ( has changer add on too) alarm, no leather seats however, and no sunroof. But it has everything else. So its basically everything but leather seats and a sunroof. Thats still pretty loaded compared to my old car, a 1989 CRX Si, which had no AC, no power windows, no power locks, not even power steering!

Cool.

I'll be going from a Sebring convertible that is rather noisy on the highway and just HATES temps under 50F (top creaks and moans like an abandoned haunted house).

I'll miss having a convertible, for sure, but this car is sounding more and more like something I'd enjoy.

It's still a good deal. :) Only $12K and you've got a well-equipped car that's fun to drive, relatively reliable, and has the extra utility of the 5-door configuration.

yeah, i wasnt even planning on buying it, until i drove it. It looks sporty, its not "slow", and its got a lot of room. I was planning on buying another honda/acura, but when i drove this and was told the price, i basically bought it.

19k miles on a car that's about 2 years old? Low mileage.

Nice find!

Congrats! I own a 2003.5 Black Mica P5 and love it to death.

I love the design and and handling of it. Very practical for me, as it is sporty as well as gives me more than enough room.

EDIT: You might want to visit here for P5 community :D

Compared to other pseudo wagons in this segment, the Protege5 is small, and it's performance is only mediocore with the 2.0L. Of course, compared to batmang's CRX, the P5 is a boat. I drive an MX-3 and my test drives in the P5 were great. Felt roomy and relatively peppy. When I brought along a friend and turned on the A/C, the car lost a noticeable amount of power.

Pros:
1) Looks great, if you don't mind driving a small wagon (don't kid yourselves, it's more of a wagon then a hatchback). Personally I love the looks, but don't care for the stigma that surrounds "wagon."
2) Great road feel. The ride is firm, compared to the Vibe/Matrix, Aerio, Focus, but still soft enough to not get annoying.
3) Breaks felt great. Strong when they needed to be and very well modulated.
4) Aftermarket parts available for the 2.0L 4-cyl. Flyinmiata.net has a turbo package available for the P5 if you're into that sorta thing.
5) Reasonably well equipped for the price. ABS, moonroof, side curtain airbags, 6 disc in-dash CD changer, leather, are the big optional items.
6) Great warranty.

Cons:
1) I greatly disliked the interior. The design looks bad to me, and some of the trim pieces were extremely flexible and loose, especially in the center console area. If you look underneath the steering wheel, you'll notice there isn't any trim covering the wires, bolts, etc. You don't see this area often, but just knowing that all the metal is bare bothers the hell out of me.
2) The power was more than adequate for a point A to B vehicle. Passing power was also adequate on the interstate. However, turning on the air condition and/or carpooling with other passengers caused a very noticeable loss of power.
3) Some people don't like driving "wagons."
4) The engine is rather buzzy at higher RPMs, compared to the Matrix and Vibe. Not terrible, not by any stretch of the imagination, but noticeable. Not perfectly smooth and quiet. It's still quiet enough to be a non-issue for all but the most anally retentive people.
5) Wind noise at 60+ MPH is TERRIBLE with the roof rack installed. Average/tolerable without it.

I was extremely close to buying this vehicle. The $2250 rebate and a price of $200 over invoice made the final sale price at just under $16000 out the door for a brand new midnight blue P5 with the moonroof and 6-disc in-dash CD changer. When it was all said and done, it was Con #3 that made me rethink my decision. I was willing to overlook the interior design and the average engine power, but the fact that it was a wagon gave me serious second doubts. As much as I liked the vehicle, I just didn't love it. I'm too young for a wagon and it just didn't fit my personality. I even contemplated buying a standard Protege and installing the aftermarket Mazdaspeed body kit.

With all that said, I think I may have fallen head over heals for the Mazda3 sedan (the wagon I'm sort of "blah" about so far - I need to see it in person). Granted, there are a number of other vehicles that I would rather have, but at that price point it's looks and equipment list is unsurpassed.

If I was buying any compact wagon right now, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind, I would pick the Protege5 over it's competitors. But I think I'm more a sedan, coupe, or compact hatchback kinda guy.

Well, it's not like you look at a Protege5 and think "Buick Roadmaster". I'm fairly young and I think wagons are great. In general, they offer many positives and few negatives compared to their sedan brethren. I'd drive one in a second.

Lovely feedback, pretty much everything stated above is 100% true. Especially the roof rack noise if you happen to have a sunroof. It is loud from what everyone says, but its easily fixed by removing the rack. As for the power of the car, its a 2.0L 130hp car, but its not SLOW, but it isnt my CRX Si either, by a long shot. My CRX would waste a lot of these new $17,000 cars easily, but thats what you get from a plastic car with a 105hp engine. hehe. I knew buying this car wasnt going to satisfy my need for speed, but the looks of the car alone cancled that though out. I absolutely love the car, and giving up the need for speed is best anyway, I dont need anymore tickets. I already have 2 on my record. Another plus was insurance, im 21 years old with 2 speeding violations, my girlfriend is 19 with no violations at all. We both have Progressive on my insurance policy. She has a 1997 Cavaleir and i have the 2002 Protege5. Both of us full coverage is only $315 a month. Not bad at all considering my tickets. All in all, i couldnt have bought a better car, its a nice fun sporty looking car that will eventually become a family car. I love it.

I am not kidding myself, the car is a 4 door hatchback, not a wagon. Length wise, it is the same as the sedan counterpart.

Check out the Mazda site yourself, the chassis is labled as "hatchback," hence less room in the back.

P5 vs. wagon

I don't know about you, but 90% people tell me what a nice car it is and they call it a hatchback.

EDIT: I am 23 years old myself

First off, you're comparing a wagon based off a mid-sized sedan to a wagon from a compact sedan. Vehicles in this segment stick to what is traditionally considered a wagon - VW Passat, Saturn L-series, Ford Taurus, Subaru Legacy, etc. Secondly, some mid-sized wagons are equal in length to their sedan counterpart - the Taurus being a perfect example. Both of them are some ~190 inches in length, but the wagon has substantially more cargo capacity.

Wagons in the compact segment try to play off the "hatchback" bologne to keep from scaring away customers. I would highly recommend checking your cargo capacity numbers again, because the Protege sedan is listed at 12.9 cu ft, while the wagon is listed at 19.8 cu ft, both numbers are with the seats up.

And the Protege5 is actually about 5 inches shorter overall than the sedan, but it's also 2 inches taller. The added height with the flattened rear end gives the distinct impression of a wagon, regardless of how the specs make it look. Of course Mazda is going to classify the vehicle as a "hatchback" considering most young people get scared at the mere mention of the word.

yeah, its definitely not a hatchback, hatchbacks are basically 2 door cars with a 3rd door "trunk". Good examples would be a CRX or a Civic Hatchback. Even an Eclipse could fall into that catergory. The P5 is more of a wagon, its just not as gay looking as most. :D

Awesome! I have a 2002 Protege ES sedan that I love. I might spring for the turbo once the warranty wears out, and am planning on upgrading the speakers and adding an amplifier. Should make it into a nice sleeper.

I got mine for 14,000 out the door exactly one year ago, it was used with only 2,000 miles though.

Hope you have fun in it, I managed to topspeed it at 115 MPH on a deserted highway in Indiana, with 4 people in the car (they were scared shitless no less, but the thing is solid and stable, though VERY noisy at 60+ mph.

Enjoy the pro5!

Wow, 115mph.. P

Upgrading speakers and adding an amp is considered making a car into a "sleeper" now? Wow... :Q
