And the government took nearly half.

:hmm:

Before tax: $14,500
After tax: $8,300

lol, I thought you were going to have this XXL sized check (in terms of physical dimensions) made out for something like a hundred bucks for a short week or something.

But of course that wouldn't make any sense.

Also, boo uncle sam!

edit: and that doesn't even include anything like sales taxes or property taxes...

Yeah, my employer pays us performance based bonuses at the end of the year and the government always takes at least 45%. So it's usually like, "$8k! Sweet! Oh, wait, nope, that's a check for $4.3k. :("

Barack Obama knows how to spend your money better than you do.

I hate to turn this into a P&N thing but:

a) a good portion of that goes to state taxes as well
b) Obama has not raised taxes on any individual making < $200k, which quick math shows the OP likely doesn't.

To the OP: If it's a bonus check then you'll get a decent chunk of that money back as a refund eventually anyway. Also $8300 in one check is nothing to scoff about..except on aTOT of course where everyone that's the average hourly wage.

Pardon my lack of precision, but the buck stops at the White House. Doesn't matter who's in it. Doesn't matter whether they've raised or lowered taxes. They're still collecting them because they know how to spend it better than you do.

That's a good lump sum. But in the other hand that a majority of people are still working..while others are getting laid off/unable to get a job.

Buck stops at Congress since they have the power of the purse, whether they choose to exercise that power to its fullest or cede some of it to another branch.

Who else is going to pay for road construction crews, fire department salaries, and public education?

For certain things, yes. But this isn't a dictatorship, so for many things, no.

They're still collecting them because they know how to spend it better than you do.
You're right about that.

You know that road you drove on today? Your tax dollars paid for it.

Any chance you used municipal water, sewer, or electricity today?

When you call 911, does someone answer?

Aside from the fact you should stay in P&N, consider the distribution of government spending - the vast majority of spending goes for something other than what you listed.
