I must have been the last man standing who had never owned an iPod. I have always liked the hardware but being
"tethered" to iTunes for synching and the whole "authorization scheme" for the computers you synch from and so forth always held me back. A 4 GB Nano came into my possession recently at no cost
to me so I headed down the road I said I would never travel. I don't hate iTunes exactly, in fact I like the streaming radio service
and I have purchased some content and rented some movies in the past. I have had several bad experiences using the library in itunes
in the past I have chosen not to use iTunes to manage all my music and I have some music files that are FLAC, APE, OGG etc.
I did load some MP3 files in the library and synced the Nano successfully and even put a few pics on the nano. My problems began when I
re-attached the Nano again and attempted to delete the pics (to small a screen) and remove a few files. The Nano first appears as a device but when I click on it to get to the summary screen nothing happens and it says synch complete and then the Nano disappears from the device list and in fact the device heading disappears all together. A Google search reveals this is not a unique event and others with phones, touches, minis have had the same issue.
I have found, in my no doubt under informed experience, that the syncing process, at least in Windows, to be a royal PITA. For the record I run Vista Home Premium 64 bit SP2 fully updated. Updated itunes/quicktime. I realize other options exist. Media Monkey, Songbird, Winamp etc for Windows. I run Ubuntu 9.04 on Wubi (not often) and I have Mint 7 and Suse 11.1 in Virtual Box. I also have RC 7 in Virtual Box and will try that for giggles. Right now I have not even listened to all I have on the Nano but I would like to be able to rotate/manage the music on it without major hassles
First off what is my problem/solution, other than ignorance, syncing the Nano? What experiences have others had using other software to manage their ipods? I like iTunes and I like the ipod, I just think that using them together is very cumbersome. What else is out there to free my ipod from the shackles Apple built into iTunes?
