One of my Xmas gifts was a small jar of caviar which I had never tried before. Since I really like most seafood I thought it was pretty cool.

After trying the stuff though a few times now I don't really see the appeal. It's not bad tasting, but it's not really good either. I'm just taking it out of the fridge and spreadin it on saltines, maybe there's a better way.

Anyone really like this stuff?

I LOVE caviar, too bad this stuff is expensive. What kind did you get?

Never had it; never could see the appeal of fishegg goop.

Terry Bradshaw: "Where I come from, we call this stuff 'bait'!"

You need better crackers. :p

I don't understand the appeal either. It's not horrid but it's not all that great.
I just don't like eating fish eggs in general. The texture kind of gets to me.

Really depends on exactly what it was that you got....do you know what kind, what fish, what "country" or sea? And a lot really does depend on teh cracker, as much as it might seem unfeasible...if you're looking for more taste, try a roe...I'm sure there's someone here that's much more knowledgable than I anyway.

Capelin Caviar. It's green and from Seattle Caviar Co., but says "product of Iceland".

I'm also wondering how long this stuff keeps in the fridge.

Unopened, about a week, once opened, 3 days max.

BTW, you really do need to find a better "cracker," saltines ain't gonna cut it.

Green? You got me there bud.. I have only known red and black caviar. Red is salmon roe and black is from sturgeon. Do not keep it out of fridge for longer then maybe an hour. Caviar should be served on ice, chilled. Try it on crackers or thinly sliced bread with a glass of well-chilled Spumante bubbly. Mmmmmmmmmm.......

Black malosol caviar is the good stuff. It only comes from the Caspian sea, and I believe the sturgeon there is now endangered.
That's why it's insanely expensive. But sometimes my uncle brings some from Russia and I endulge myself. I preffer to take some white bread, spread some butter on it and put caviar on top of it.

Simplicity is excellent SuperTool! :) Toasted thinly sliced bread w/ a touch of butter = excellent! :D

Just make sure you don't use butter that is lightly salted as that will ruin it IMHO :)

Blech! Pure Nastiness. Most people dont eat this crap, but of those who do, do it for the status more so than the taste.

Next time you want a fishy taste, just take a tablespoon of Cod Liver Oil...nothing like burping up a fishy smell after eating that crap.
