I got some cash, what would be the best upgrade for my system?

Currently I have the following:

Gigabyte GA-7N400 pro2
Generic 2 GB DDR2700@183 mhz, running at 7-3-3-2.5
Barton 2500+@ 12.5x183
Radeon 9800 Pro@420/380
2x Western Digital 80 GB Hard Drives running on Raid 0

This is a gaming machine, and also doubles to do schoolwork and such, once in a while anyway.. 😉

I have a couple hundred dollars to burn.

I don't see anything that will give you a significatant performance boost.

Do you need a DVD Burner or something? what about a new monitor?

Well you see, I am heading off to college next fall, and the rents say they will upgrade my comp before I go. I still have 3 more months before then, but I like to plan stuff out quite extensively. All the parts there are a year old now.

No need for DVD burner. Monitor is a relatively old (1996) sony multiscan200ES, its 17", but I am not sure if there are better monitors for a reasonable cost.

Something I came up with would be a new stylish case (mine sucks), but I am not certain if cases can be replaced. I would assume I could do so.

My PSU is not great either.

What are you talking about? That's a nice PSU
I don't like that it runs so hot. It's almost like a portable space heater; my bedroom is like 10 degrees hotter than the rest of the house when I leave it on overnight.

I have a Dell at work that does that too.

I can't stand to be in that room without a door or window open for more than an hour or two. That's just Word and Excel type apps too.

If you want a case and PSU (even though yours is fine) look at an Antec Sonata or SLK3700BQE.

If you are just needing someone to agree with you I will, case and power supply it is then. Of the affordable good power supplies I like Enermax. I have had both them and Antec and the Enermax by far was a better PS. As far as case that is left up to you. I have had the Dragon style and the Lian-li and no contest the Lian-li is a better case. But you may want to check out the Cooler Masters, they are sweet.

I am pretty sure the whole system generates the heat in your room and not just the power supply alone. In all honesty your original post sums up the answer to your question :

Burning money is exactly what you will be doing as there isn't one feasible upgrade for you right now that will prove to be beneficial for $100. I can think of Bonus items like Audigy 2 ZS or a new case, maybe a wireless mouse and a keyboard or even a new power supply (if you wish) to spoil yourself, but otherwise spend it on something else besides your computer or keep it aside for a later upgrade. Remember a smart computer user does not upgrade when they have money to burn, but upgrades when the cost-benefit ratio makes it worthwhile to invest and when a certain component is truly outdated in his/her eyes.

That is probably true, but I find the air coming out of the case fans to be quite cool, but the air coming out of the PSU fan to be significantly warmer, almost hot.

Also, is there anywhere I can get an alienware style case, without an alienware computer? Those look incredible.
