I doubt he'll be flying a fighter jet though. Enjoy the transport/cargo planes.

Most, most likely. Fighter pilot positions are given to choice graduates of the AF Academy. It is extremely selective even for them.

All the OCS people I knew that were assigned as Pilots (which you could count on one hand) at Montgomery were for transport planes....and most likely in the Reserves. You take what you can get, but these guys all dreamed and worked hard to obtain a fighter pilot assignments, to their dismay. From what I understand, it is again extremely difficult to go from flying transports to some type of fighter jet.

The Air Force is VERY inflexible and regimental. They IMMEDIATELY put you into boxes which are VERY difficult to get out of--despite what the AF Propaganda may say otherwise.

Morale at Mongtgomery is VERY low from Generals on down. They're all rat-race careerists scratching over each other to climb the pruned-off officer ranks. Lots of Pilot wash-outs (as well as Missiliers) also roam the halls of Montgomery as Instructors--they have a major bug up their ass with Pilots assignees. Keep your head low b/c if you have an instructor hate you, they can do a lot to run you out of OCS. The program is set up to fail out a good portion. They fill the beds to keep their OCS budget, but they only need so many heads to fill the stagnant AF ranks so they fail out many as a rule.

Other things you need to know is that AF Pilots are Gods in the AF. They write their own rules and are the ones that make the higher Officer levels. Every, and I mean EVERY non-pilot is second rank in status. If someone is ambitious and has bad eyes, stay away from the AF.

Despite the morale, which I assume is even lower nowadays b/c of the war, as a AF Pilot you will ultimately have a CHOICE spot at some Airline with open arms extended. You'll have an upper middle class job with the airliners with GREAT hours. Truly one of the best positions out there. 😀

I go to officer training school in july or sept. Man I can barely contain myself.
Congrats. You didn't get selected as a pilot though, you were admitted into the training program.

Is it possible to be a pilot in the USAF without prior flying experience? In other words, could a guy qualify, then the USAF trains him?

A big NO. Toooo much high quality competition. Get your license independently. You better have great college grades from an awesome school (preferably engineering) with great recommendations and interviews.

yes you can if you go through ROTC route. I hear about people being selected for pilot slots all the time without fight exp from ROTC

its possible through OTS but very rare. I do know a guy that got picked up for OTS without any flying exp.

I agree.. but if you are going to set goals why not set them high? Aim High Air Force! 🙂

Seriously I know the competition is going to be tough and the odds are against me because I didn't go to the Air force Academy and I didn't come from a long line of Military officers. But I do have determination and desire. This is the *ONLY* job I can think of right now that I would ever want to do. I'm single so I can focus 110% on my flying career. You better believe I'm going to bust my ass in flight school.. kiss ass.. and do anything it takes to get the aircraft I want.

I know a retired F-4/F-16 pilot that graduated from college as an engineer went to OTS so it's definately possible.

Don't count me out yet! I'm going to do one of these stupid posts when I graduate from UPT letting you all know what aircraft I get 🙂🙂🙂 Even if it's a heavy I'll still living my dream.

I talked to the reserve recruiter and he says they only accept heavy pilots for the reserve. They actually have to interview with an organization before being accepted so they know they are going to fly heavies before they even start UPT.
