I got screwed on my PA writing Assessment Test!

OK, first off, let me state that I am not the one to complain about scores. Usually I?m the one telling those people that bitch that they "only" got a 1580/1600 on their SATs to STFU, but this time I really did get screwed.

It?s in the writing part of the test. There were 3 different types of writing: informational, narrative, and persuasive. Each was scored out of 20 points, with 4 points going to each of 5 different categories. For informational and narrative I got a 19, and 18, respectively. Good scores, and I'm very pleased with them. However, for persuasive I recieved a 10. The topic? (roughly) "What law should be changed/removed/added?" My response? "It should be OK to be a pirate," a highly silly quite funny piece about why we should be able to sail the seven seas plundering ships like they used to. I included everything, from how the Navy would have to use wooden ships as well to fight you (since those newfangled metal battleships would just be unfair) to how getting scurvy would be fun - obviously from start to finish a deliberately off the wall piece.

And I'm convinced they just gave me the 10 because of my subject. First off, unless my brain fell out the day I wrote the third one, my other high scores should suggest that the third one would be at least an OK score. However most importantly are the individual scores they gave me for the third essay - straight 2?s.

How the hell could I get straight 2's? There are 5 different categories of scoring, and only ONE has anything to do with the topic and how exact you follow it - content. The rest are completely independent, and have nothing to do with the topic. How would me choosing pirating affect my focus? Or organization? Or style, or conventions? It wouldn't, that?s how. My other two essay's scores obviously showed that I can in fact organize a paper correctly, stay focused, use a variety of words, and spell correctly, so how exactly can I get 2's in the third essay?

I'm convinced that whoever graded this paper saw the topic, didn't have a sense of humor, and just gave me the 10, without even taking the papers merits into account ? and that isn?t right. They asked for my opinion and I gave it, albeit in a slightly different manner. But I did it right, and it should have been scored that way. I?m looking to see if there is a way I can contact them to complain, because something is wrong here.

Well, I would've been ROTFLMAO if I read your paper.

Maybe they though you were mocking the system..."THEY" get extremely agitated when we do that.

Thats the thing though. If I wanted to screw the system I would have just written, "You can shove this paper up your ass," but I didn't. I had 5 paragraphs. I used big words (correctly). I showed proper use of grammer. I stayed focused.

Oh well. I'm just hoping there is something I could do, but I doubt it :D

Ha. Don't get me started on the PSATs. I took them last year, straight 1's and 2's across the board. What bothers me the most is that I got a 2 for the grammar/spelling section...

Anyway, I'm an honors English student, and this really surprised me. I asked my English teacher about it, and she had a few choice words to say. She was in grad school, and had just written a fifteen page paper on everything that is wrong with the PSATs. There's so much racial profiling, along with the idiot testers you ran into.

Hopefully, that made you feel a little better about the score. Hearing a teacher rant about how her colleagues suck made me feel better.

Just be glad that test doesn't determine whether or not you get one of these mythical seals on your diploma.

P.S.
If I was grading your test, I couldn't imagine scoring your paper highly either. You're supposed to pick something serious, like the death penalty, and it was never OK to be a pirate. Being a pirate was illegal, and changing a law to allow the murder and plunder of innocents doesn't make sense.

I disagree. Priveteers have been quiet popular in the past.
They were generally allowed to plunder or murder innocents if they were allies of a country you were at war with.
International laws are relativly new and still not too great. So it wasn't to hard to be a pirate if you could find a few ports who would except your "buiseness."
