Today I just purchased some Acoustic Response studio monitors for $500cdn out of the back of some guys van, who said he worked for Soundstream.

I once considered myself an honest person but now I am a hypocrite... I used to believe that downloading music for free was wrong and I would alway frown upon the purchase of stolen items. Why did I do this then? I am obviously an idiot and a hypocrite who saw a chance to get something for nothing.

Why do I feel good that I got ripped off? The thread title realling isn't sarcasm! If I received the $2400 speakers that I thought I was getting, the weight of guilt would have pissed me off more. When driving home I was seriously guilty for the wicked transaction that took place. When I got on the net and found out they were crap I was actually relieved! I think this has strengthened my purchasing honesty and I will probably never do this again. I know in the short term I am gonna be a little annoyed about this, but the experience will never die and I will continue to learn from this mistake.

Now I am off to 38@y to sell these pieces of crap and minimize my loss. I hope somebody will learn from my mistake... don't buy anything [edited for ForeverSilky :)] from a back of a guys van :) (that sort of seems intuitive doesn't it :))

I learned my mistake from that scam long ago. My speakesr actually sounded good, though, and a friend bought them off of me for what I bought my replacements (Acoustic Research 318-PS) for. Everything turned out ok. ;)

Mucman,

Don't worry about it. I made a decision when I got ripped off: I can either be a complete skeptic about everything, and partially lose my faith in people, or I can keep my faith in people, and judge situations. I've continued to be trusting, but just make sure you look at anything that is too good to be true: it probably is. :Q

I feel great also. And don't even think about asking for your money back, I've already spent it.

BoberFett, I didn't know you were visiting Vancouver! You should have PM'ed me and I would have invited you over for some beer and to watch the Canucks game! :p

Ahh... the good old speaker scam. My last experience with that was interesting. These guys in a white van (it's always white for some reason) pulled up next to me at a light and honked. I rolled the window down and the guy asked if I wanted to buy some speakers. I looked at my passenger (buddy who is a state trooper) and he reached for his wallet. He flashed the guy his badge. The look on the guy's face was priceless. Heh...

Well if it looks to good to be true ....... then it probably is :(

That Van/speaker scam was over here in Vancouver BC a couple years back. It turns out that they are actually old theatre speakers that are almost crapped out.

Live & Learn.

Cheers,
Aquaman

It appears the pawnshops of Vancouver know a whole lot about this scam... I wish I could have been warned. I managed to get $40 for em... I told the guy I just want to get rid of them because they are leaving a bad taste in my mouth. He wouldn't take em until I said a price. I said whatever you are willing to give... he said $40 and I agreed, he said he felt sorry for me, but I told him I learned my lesson.

I am starting to feel bitter about it now because I realised I just lost 1/3 my tuition money :(. At least I don't feel guilty though. The only person who made a mistake was me... I would rather have people take advtantage of my mistakes than me taking advantage of other peoples mistakes.

$500 dollar speakers
$40 pay back from pawn shop
= $460 lesson that I will always remember

LOL I thought the speaker scam was a US thing. Guess it migrated north. :)

It is all over the place, and always with the same Acoustic Response speakers. It's all over the Southern California area, I've seen it in the Bay Area, and friends in Seattle have seen it too. I think those speakers were made especially for this scam. :p

Tsk, tsk. I'm very disappointed in you Muc. Buying those speakers and paying that money!

What is this world coming to that we'll degrade ourselves into doing such things?

Had you been any kind of a DECENT person, you would've dropped some of the money on the ground 'accidently' while paying the guy. When he would've went to help grab the money, you should've kicked him square in the nuts. While he was down you would've had opportunity to 'lay the smack down' on a perfectly defenseless person. Then you could've grabbed the money and taken the van (with the speakers still in it, of course).

See? If you were 'decent' at all you would've made out quite nicely.

If I kept em I would I would keep on seeing a symbol of my gullibility/stupidity. I just wanted to get rid of them.

Namuna, I'm very dissappointed in myself... I was thinking of bailing but I guess I was just weak willed at that moment. What bugs me is that it seems that everyone knows of this scam yet I knew nothing about it. I guess it's easy to take advantage of us Canucks.
