Long story short, someone has been messing hardcore with my PayPal account. I have no idea how they broke in / guessed (no way!!!) my password, but they caused some havoc.

Today the withdrew 1500$ from my bank account and attempted to get 800$ for my credit card (through PayPal). Aparenlty the bank account withdraw went through sucessfully (it was sent to a place called PCANDLAN.COM) - I got an a Paypal transaction complete email then this:

To: (my personal email address)
Subject: Autoreply: (my PayPal company name) has just sent you $1500.00 with PayPal
From: orders@pcandlan.com
Sender: orders@pcandlan.com
Date: Mon, 21 Jan 2002 14:16:11 -0500

Thank your for your order/request. We will make every effort to expidite your request. You will receive a reply from us soon. www.pcandlan.com

----------------------------------------

So that's cute. Following were attempts at 800$ from my credit card.

Since my bank account balance is somewhere near 5.00, neither of them could have gone through but I stopped my credit card and bank account just in case.

But then, get this, someone sent me 1950$.
I wont say any names, but I doubt this person meant to send me money.

I immediately logged in after I noticed and changed my PayPal password in an attempt to stop people from messing with it.

PayPal is currently investigating and will get back to me.

All in all, I'm rather shook up about this situation. I'm going to demand that PayPal give me a letter of clearence so my credit history doesn't get fubarred. Hopefully I can keep the 1950$, but if not, I'll be satisfied with a zero-balance. :)

LMK your thoughts, similar experiences?

And no, I've never clicked on any of those silly PayPal scams. *Never!*
Nor have I gotten viruses or given that password out. As if someone could use it anyway, it's a big password.

Edit1: I checked my PayPal account, and I have two credit card deinals last december for 1000$ and 1800$. Why in the hell did I not get some sort of notice in email or something? Grr!

Edit 1: Clarity, addition.

That sucks SO bad... I feel kinda crunchy now, cause I just bought money in Anarchy Online off of eBay, and I paid with PayPal.

The good thing is that I won't be out any money, since I have none to be out.

But the concept still remains that someone had that kind of access to something that is most definately mine.

I hear a lot of PayPal horror stories too but I have used it very successfully for a number of transactions. The only way I can see that they god your pass if you went to one of those paypal-secure.com sites.

I haven't checked my PayPal account for approximately a year now.

I still have money left in my account. I know it's time to withdraw it . . . I just thought I might selll more items so there was no need remove it all. Now, it's ime. Hopefully it isn't too late. :)

Hi technogeeky,

PayPal has not been hacked. I am going to guess that you may have entered in information at a site similar to the recent scam attempts (paypalebay.com or paypal-login.com). Please feel free to send me your account email address, as I can have our fraud team advise you on what to do.

I am posting the SECURITY TIPS for the benefit of other users-

Security Tips

We at PayPal work hard to protect our customers, and have many security measures to help ensure your protection.
There are also steps that you, our customer, can take to help protect yourself. We'd like to provide you with this information so that we can work together to protect against fraud.
Passwords:
Never, ever share your PayPal password with anyone. Never, ever share your PayPal password with anyone. PayPal representatives will NEVER ask you for your Password. If you believe someone else has gotten access to your password, please change it immediately and Contact Us.
Select a password that is easy to remember, but hard to figure out. One good way to create a secure password is to choose a phrase of two or three words and add a 2 or 3 digit number to the end of the phrase. Avoid choosing obvious words or dates such as a nickname or birthdate. It is always a good idea to mix numbers with letters when choosing your password.
Don't use the same password you use for AOL, eBay, MSN, Yahoo, or other online services. Using the same password for multiple websites makes it easy for thieves to access your personal information.

Secure Websites:
Whenever entering sensitive personal information (such as checking account or credit card numbers) onto any website, make sure that the website encrypts the information you send to, and receive from, the site. When you log into your PayPal account, you will always be on a secure website. You can check if the website you are using has this type of security in two ways:
Check to make sure the URL begins with "https" rather than "http"
Look for a lock icon on the bottom left or bottom right of your browser,
which should look like this:

Email Security
If you receive an email and are unsure whether it is from PayPal, come directly to the PayPal site at www.paypal.com. Don't click on any link in an email which seems suspicious to you. These security measures will help ensure that you are logging into PayPal. The only site you should ever type your username and password into is at www.paypal.com.

Using Your Account Wisely
Do not use your PayPal account to collect and transfer money for someone else. This type of activity is often conducted as a form of money laundering. Money laundering is a state and federal crime which often results in significant criminal penalties. If someone contacts you requesting that you transfer money because they are unable to, you should deny their request and Contact Us immediately.
Become a Verified PayPal member.
Examine all privacy and security seals before doing business with a particular website and make sure they are legitimate. PayPal is a licensee of the TRUSTe Privacy Program.

I can wholeheartedly assure you that I have not once clicked on one of those sites. I do not even *use* paypal often enough to look at those emails.

I keep every email that I've had from virtually everyone, and I have no such email. The last email I have from any paypal related source is 12/18/01.

That is legitimate.

The message before that is also legitimate. As are every single message I have.

I don't know what happend, but hopefully it's being taken care of.

This happened to me last week. I canceled my card, but charges kept showing up. Hopefully I'll get those funds returned to me soon.
