aren't they always?

No...not always.

I carried a Class A license for over 30 years. I finally had to give it up because I can't pass the physical anymore.
Truck drivers, especially over-the-road drivers, tend to drive too fast most of the time. All too often, they're either getting paid by the mile, or a percentage of the load, and the faster they drive, the more money they can make.

Here in California, they're legally limited to a max speed of 55, (and so are cars/pickups that have any kind of trailer attached) but it's extremely rare to see a trucker going 55. Usually, only the "company drivers" whose company monitors their speeds, stop times, etc. ever maintain the posted limits.

I HATE people who travel in the right-most lane on 3 lanes of same-direction travel on a freeway. If I had my way, the right-most lane would be completely empty unless somebody was entering or exiting.
Where I live, big trucks often stay in the far left lane just so they don't need to deal with all these assholes jumping lanes or getting on or off the freeway. Stay in the left lane, cruise through the entire city, no problem.

It's the worst when the entire right lane is bumper to bumper, nobody can safely get on the freeway, but the other lanes are spaced apart. It's like people are intentionally preventing others from using the freeway.

They must have been in a hurry because highway patrol jump all over a truck going that fast.. they keep it within 5 miles of the speed limit.. If they get a ticket the insurance skyrockets. What makes me mad is your going 90+ in the 70 and truck pulls out infront of you to pass.. Sometimes i pull back infront of them and slow down a touch and watch them freak out (really wonder if it teaches them a lesson or not)

you should have your license revoked. You have no business being behind the wheel of an automobile.

no. only when you see such signage.

No, that's not always correct either. Here in California:

Right Lane Rule

Vehicles listed in CVC §22406 must be driven in the designated lane or lanes when signs are posted.

When no signs are posted, these vehicles must be driven in the right-hand traffic lane or as close as possible to the right edge or curb. On a divided highway with four or more traffic lanes in one direction, these vehicles may also be driven in the lane just to the left of the right-hand lane. When overtaking or passing another vehicle going in the same direction, drivers of such vehicles must use either: (1) the designated lane, (2) the lane just to the left of the right-hand lane, or (3) the right-hand traffic lane when such use is permitted.

I found out about the law the hard way...my first summer here, I moved into the "passing lane" (#1 or 3) to pass two carloads of farmworkers who were pacing each other on the freeway...going about 40. I moved into the passing lane, passed the vehicles, moved back into the center lane, and went on my way...until the CHP officer pulled me over and wrote me a ticket for that "third lane violation."
I knew I couldn't "DRIVE" in that lane, but didn't realize I was prohibited from using it even to pass. (I hadn't changed to a California license yet) It's called "$100 lane" because that's usually the MINIMUM fine truckers face for using it...I got off pretty easy. Court costs and traffic school.

In bigger cities, mostly in places where there are major freeway interchanges, trucks are often permitted to use other lanes for through traffic...but once through those interchanges, they're generally back to the two right-most lanes again.

Of course, all states are slightly different...

Don't worry about it. Eventually one of those big trucks will say "fuck it" and plow into him.

I always hope that happens to those people who merge going half the speed limit. The trucks who were nice enough to drive in the right lane get totally fucked because some retard is attempting suicide on the freeway.... AGAIN.
If there's a big truck going pretty slow in the left lane, don't bitch at him. He's doing that so he doesn't need to slow down for retards.

MUCH to my own delight, and to torture my poor wife, one time I drove from Fort Lauderdale to Tampa across Alligator Alley (I-75 through the swamp to you yanks) at EXACTLY the speed limit for the entire 250 mile trip. It's 70 out there (with 55mph construction zones back when I did that trip) but folks regularly exceed 90 including big rigs. It's a runway basically, only one real curve in the middle. Otherwise 80 miles of runway. I exceeded 28mpg on that trip.

Not only basically a runway, but also basically no civilization and so little to no John Law. Everybody does ~90mph on that godforsaken stretch. You'd have to be crazy or a stubborn and bored mpg stat freak not to.

They were probably just going faster than you, and didn't want to slow down, so they passed on the right. Are big rigs prohibited from the far left lane?

Plus, truck drivers are kept to pretty strict schedules and deadlines. Can't afford to slow down.

I've had convos with my trucker friend about this before. Haulers are all about time and fuel efficiency through maintaining momentum. Since they often are barred from the high speed lane on big, 3 lane highways, they DO NOT like anyone in their way in the middle lane, regardless of the posted speed limit.

The truckers know better than anyone exactly how fast you can go on any stretch of highway, and they also know all the speed traps and where they are.

The fiction of the posted speed limit is part of the ongoing socio-political hypocrisy that has blossomed all over American in the last several decades.

What's interesting about speed limits is that they're clearly there for the sake of revenue, not safety. A good 99% of the speeding tickets in my area are the "photo radar" kind which do not count against your record. They do that for a reason. You can speed as often as you want as long as you pay the fine every time

If you're poor like me, you go the speed limit and intentionally piss off people who have more money.

But on the 5 they're barely going 60-65 or so. Shrug. Doesn't feel too fast. Isn't the speed limit 60 there for them? (10 under the 70 for regular autos)

From the California Vehicle Code:

Speed Limits

The maximum speed limit in California is 55 miles per hour (mph) for the following listed vehicles (CVC §22406)

V C Section 22406 Maximum Speed for Designated Vehicles
Maximum Speed for Designated Vehicles

22406. No person may drive any of the following vehicles on a highway at a speed in excess of 55 miles per hour:

(a) A motortruck or truck tractor having three or more axles or any motortruck or truck tractor drawing any other vehicle.

(b) A passenger vehicle or bus drawing any other vehicle.

(c) A schoolbus transporting any school pupil.

(d) A farm labor vehicle when transporting passengers.

(e) A vehicle transporting explosives.

(f) A trailer bus, as defined in Section 636.

Middle lane is fine as long as you are doing better than the speed limit. If there are 3 lanes, I will always cruise in the middle lane.

Two lanes you better keep to the right though.

i usually do this as well and only get in the far right if im within ~2 miles of my exit.

ill pass on the left whenever i can, and usually prefer to let people pass me if trying to get by them would mean me cutting them off very close. i hate doing that

the money is charged in an attempt of punishment, so you wont drive too fast which becomes a safety issue...dumass

This really only applies when there are two lanes. If there is a third lane, the far right lane is for merging/exiting and slow assed drivers, the middle is treated as the normal lane, and the left lane is the passing lane.

unless there's alot of traffic, it's not SO bad to hang out in the middle, but generally if you can, without having to weave in and out of your lane, move over as far to the right as possible.

my motto is to move to the right, unless doing so will cause more harm then good (I.e., me swerving in for just 5 seconds to swerve back into the left lane before the lemming line opening passes me and I can't get back in until the 15 car train finally passes)
