You didn't do anything wrong... but you should not admit to getting passed by 18 wheelers to anyone... I don't think there's ever a proper situation in which you can be passed by an 18 wheeler without driving slow... if not absolutely slow then relatively slow. You should have just kept up with the left lane.

MUCH to my own delight, and to torture my poor wife, one time I drove from Fort Lauderdale to Tampa across Alligator Alley (I-75 through the swamp to you yanks) at EXACTLY the speed limit for the entire 250 mile trip. It's 70 out there (with 55mph construction zones back when I did that trip) but folks regularly exceed 90 including big rigs. It's a runway basically, only one real curve in the middle. Otherwise 80 miles of runway. I exceeded 28mpg on that trip.

The right lanes near me are messed up compared to the middle and left. This causes all the slow drivers to go on the middle and left whether highway or local.

I always keep as far right as I can, except to pass. It is not uncommon for me to be cruising at 75 in the right lane, passing 2-3 other lanes. I have no control over the lane they choose, but just stay with the rightest clear path I can find.

Generally though I wind up in the left lane, and sunday drivers in that lane cause me frustration, but I am more understanding of people who want to cruise in the center lane to avoid on and off ramps.

They were probably just going faster than you, and didn't want to slow down, so they passed on the right. Are big rigs prohibited from the far left lane?

Plus, truck drivers are kept to pretty strict schedules and deadlines. Can't afford to slow down.

Usually. I assume the law in the States is the same as here. Only light trucks can use that lane. Basically anything up to a 16' cube van.

Trucks here are governed to 110km/h so it's extremely rare that this happens here. The problem, big rigs were going too fast and causing accidents. Especially on the ramps. Unfortunately it's had the adverse side effect of clogging Toronto's already nightmarish traffic. I sometimes think there are more big rigs on that main highway than there are cars.

Apparently my sarcasm, indicated by , goes undetected.

Man you guys' feathers get ruffled way too easy lately. I figured I would throw it out there before someone else inevitably does. I could really care less how you drive. My honest opinion:

Left: Passing. People who drive too fast.
Middle: Got a long way to go still, no need to drive like an idiot to get there.
Right: Slow, exiting.

Trust me, he's the ONLY one who believes that in Boston. If you're doing the speed limit then your a speed bump.

There's plenty of them, most of them just happen to be on their cellphones, or middle aged women, or elderly.

most of the highways in my area have signs that say for trucks to keep right and their speed limit is 5 mph slower.
The semi's are in the wrong for going over the speed limit anyway imo. 5 over the speed limit seems acceptable to me, but i hate when people's driving behavior gets shitty as if your going below the limit, i don't believe in "impeding of flow" if your already going above the speed limit.

That's close, but not exactly accurate:

Cars (two axle vehicles):
Left: passing
Center: travel
Right: Exit/Enter

Trucks (not two axle vehicles)

Left: Prohibited
Center: Passing
Right: Travel/Enter/Exit

Ya did nothing wrong.

IME, truckers like to draft behind each other for the fuel savings, and like to stick in the center lane when traveling long-haul on a three-lane highway.

Them leaving you ample space, courtesy of using a blinker, etc. only is a testament to the professional drivers the US trucking industry employs. They do this for a living. Too bad we've let the mexican truckers on our highways now. I feel bad for our truckers.

On a three-lane, ideally in my mind

Left lane: speeders
Middle lane: people going 5-10 over
Right lane: speed limit

Any time somebody passes you on the right, you are in the wrong. The only exception to that is some asshat weaving through and jamming in too small a spot for a sane person, or if you moved over to make room for people coming on the freeway and they speed up to faster than you are going.
If you pay attention in the mirrors it should not happen. GTF Over when somebody is gaining on you, while they are still 200~300 yards back. Be aware that far back.
If the right lane is too rough (grow a fvcking pair, you are in a car that rides 10X better than my truck) get back out of the right lane after they pass.

even in the middle lane, you should still be actively passing people, if not, time to move over to the right. i can see some exceptions to this, like if there are many on/off ramps and merge lanes. they should have been passing you on the left.

They must have been in a hurry because highway patrol jump all over a truck going that fast.. they keep it within 5 miles of the speed limit.. If they get a ticket the insurance skyrockets. What makes me mad is your going 90+ in the 70 and truck pulls out infront of you to pass.. Sometimes i pull back infront of them and slow down a touch and watch them freak out (really wonder if it teaches them a lesson or not)

When you saw them coming behind you, you should have moved over to the right. If you didn't see them coming, pay attention to your mirrors.

When 3 bigass trucks pass you you will never be right. Just let them pass and be thankful they didnt roll over you. Bigass trucks are always right and you never want to prove them wrong. :)

I've had 18 wheelers try to pass me on a 2 lane (1 in each direction) highway when I'm already doing 70mph. Those guys have balls bigger than most peoples heads.
I always take my foot off the gas just to make sure they pass a lot faster. I don't want them rushing back into my lane and throwing me into the ditch

I HATE people who travel in the right-most lane on 3 lanes of same-direction travel on a freeway. If I had my way, the right-most lane would be completely empty unless somebody was entering or exiting.

They are driving correctly.
