I replaced an old thermostat and there was this glass tube of mercury in it and I took it outside with a hammer to try and tap off the tip so I could play with the mercury but when I tapped it it EXPLODED in my face and now mercury is all over the place and maybe I swallowed some I'm not sure. I called the poison control center place but the line is busy.

Am I gon die?D:

Your SO is supposed to tap the tip and have it explode all over her face. Are you new at this?

Quicksilver is poorly absorbed by the body. Be prepared for a heavy metal shit though!!

Okay they answered the phone. Apparently there is a difference between types of mercury, elemental mercury vs some other kind so she said I'm good.

Phew.

Anyone know how to get mercury out of little tiny concrete cracks? This stuff is super slippery.

Sorry, serious answer here. If you call the poison control center at 1-800 222-1222 you will not get a busy signal.

As a safety guy I teach my people about the poison control center, plus they helped me out when I was stung by a black widow spider. I just want to make sure people get the right idea.

You can now go back to discussing Elevenpog's mortality.

Labs used to have students play with liquid mercury with their bare hands. No one ever had a problem. It doesn't really go through the skin very well. Even people who have tried to commit suicide by eating it or by injecting it end up as failures because it doesn't absorb well through our digestive tracts or bloodstream. You are slightly more likely to have problems if you inhale it though even then that is unlikely.

Mercury is far more dangerous in a compound (once it has reacted with another chemical). That is why eating seafood is a problem, this is mercury that has already reacted and was affecting the fish.

1. It'll evaporate eventually. So if in a well-ventilated area just leave it alone.
2. I hear adding sulfur makes mercury safer. You could try dumping some sulfur on it and vacuuming it up or something, I guess. (Wear a mask, and preferably use a HEPA vacuum.)

I think a hammer might have been the wrong tool for the job lol. That sounds like performing surgery with a chainsaw. D:

There must still be a lot of T87F 'stats out there.
The dual stage heat/cool heatpump ones had FOUR switches in them.
They're not super big like the ones in older boiler controls but still have a nice amount of mercury in them.

If you removed the bulb and wanted to remove the mercury all you have to do is pull slightly on one of the leads with a pair of needle nosed pliers. The glass end will fracture and open up and allow you to pour out the contents.

But if you did use a hammer to fracture the vial perhaps you should not be playing with mercury in the first place!

Mercury is there to be played with. I mean if Torricelli didn't we wouldn't have the barometer. ;)

It was a solid glass tube, there was nothing to grasp with pliers.
