I blog for various places in my spare time, and MotorWeek noticed some of my car forum posts. They put an offer out to submit content to their "forums", and select bloggers will be featured on their online magazine.

It's an unpaid offer...sounds like a sneaky way to get free labor for your website 😀 Anyone ever hear of this? I don't think I'm going to do it, but it sounds pretty ballsy 🙂

The main problem with writing for them is I'd be typing everything with John Davis's voice in my head. HE TENDS TO BE SHOUTY!!!!!!

Do you have a website/blog/twitter/anything you'd like to promote? Normally they give you a byline with a link.

You'd have to wear a jacket too. He seems to have one on regardless of the weather. Fully leafed out trees in the background and he's got a jacket on.

Great thread. I hate to ruin it by being serious for a moment, but I would take this as an opportunity to get noticed by a company that actually would pay you money for doing such things.

It's not something I'd like to do for a living. I like writing and doing humorous commentary. However, like anything creative, the minute you're EXPECTED to do it the creativity well dries up 🙂

Tell me about it. I am an editor of a news organization and one of my roles is to cultivate local bloggers. There are people who comment on every story articulately. They get blog access, post once, and then fall off the face of the earth.

Possibly because now they feel they are obliged to do it. Before nobody cared but them, they liked sharing their thoughts. Now they are expected to, have to in a sense, and yet are paid nothing.

I got an email or a PM or something asking to contribute to something a while back. I have no idea how many people were contacted but it didn't seem entirely like spam. However, I only do this for free because I like it. But if my product is being used for money I'm not likely to really contribute. There are rare exceptions. I post a crap ton of reviews on amazon, but this is not for amazon, but for me. I find it therapeutic 🙂

That's pretty cool. I work with a guy who writes for some of the motorcycle rags, mostly off-road stuff. He gets invited to some pretty cool press events.

Congrats!

Is your blog supposed to be about the direct car or how cars influence our lives?

I guess they give you a list of current topics, you pick one, and go to town. Like I said, don't think I would take the position, but I'm just wondering if this is common. Sees like they'd at least give you a percentage of the ad revenue.

Is there an actual commitment involved? If not, write a blog or two, and see if one gets published in their online mag. And if so, that's a story you can share for years to come. 🙂

But I totally understand about being obligated. I've been asked to volunteer to write very small pieces for websites, and it seemed quite flattering at first... That feeling didn't last long, and I quickly disappeared (as nerp alluded to.)
