I have a major problem. I dowloaded something with lots of viruses so I've ran Kapersky's overnight. Today, to be sure it was gone I rebooted into safe mode so I could run it again along with smitfraudfix. I used the msconfig cuz f8 doesn't work. Now I can't log on to my computer or get back into normal mode since I can't get into windows. I'm stuck in safe mode at the log on screen. What do I do beside completely reinstall everything?

Sounds like whatever virus your system got hit with has already done considerable damage. Surely you can't be considering anything other than a complete format and reinstall... you could be compromised even if you manage to restore your system to it's previous state. A format is the only way to go! Good luck.

Yeah, you could mess with this for days and still not be sure of the end result. I'd copy any important data to another hard drive and re-install the OS. That's the only action that will give you a guaranteed functional and secure result.

i'm gonna try winternals erd commander and then dreampackpl. one of them should work. i have all important stuff backed up on another pc. i'm guessing the antivirus deleted an important file that was infected and it wiped out my password. i just wish I could find some instructions on how to use dreampackpl

Well, if you used msconfig to boot into Safe Mode, you have to use it to reboot into Normal Mode, so see if the following helps.

While in Safe Mode:

1. Close all programs.
2. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
3. In the Open box, type the following text: msconfig
4. Click OK.
5. In the System Configuration Utility, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck /SAFEBOOT.
6. Click OK.
7. Close all programs, and restart the computer.

It should now reboot into Normal Mode.
