Unless you're looking to invest $1000's in studio monitors, you're not going to get better sound than a good isolating headset or canal-phones.

Anyhoo...I have the Logitech x-530s 5.1 setup which sound fine, and they go for like $50 at Sam's.

For $100 I'd be looking at a nice set of headphones.

I found HD-280s nice for dorm use because they kept me isolated (could listen to music when things were loud around me and could listen to music when things were quiet and not bother anyone).

This isn't to say I didn't enjoy having the best speaker system in my dorm either ;)

You can get a pretty decent 2.1 set like the logitech z-2300 / z-2200 set.

A nice set of headphones will give you more accurate sound than a speaker set, but it's nice to have decent speakers :)

HD-280's for headphones
Sennheiser PC150 for headset

If you can get the altec lansing mx5021's, I'd be jealous, cause I want em.
