I got a really stupid problem!

I got a new MSI motherboard a couple weeks ago with the KT400 chipset. I'd been using an ECS K7S5A with the SiS735 chipset. When I went to install Windows, it would not install off my drive, rather it just got to a point and BSOD'd. I tested everything and it was definately the hard drive and mobo combo that didn't agree. So I RMA'd and got an Abit KD7E with the KT333 chipset and same problem (btw it's a 40GB Western Digital Caviar). Anyway I had gotten a new 20GB Quantum Fireball, so I am like "Damn the torpedos! Full speed ahead!", and I get Windows on there.....everything seems to work and I am happy.

So I go try to overclock. It failed to post and I tried to reset the cmos but I had the wrong jumper....joy turns to panic, and I rip everything apart, and in the process I break the tab that holds the heatsink on.....not bad enough that it won't hold a heatsink, but noticeable for sure. So then I get it all together again and everything seems fine, but then I try to load trillian, my instant messenger, "We're sorry but Trillian has encountered a problem and must close". So I install every instant messenger known to man, and not one of them will work...always the same message as the first time. I determined that the problem was in the connecting online by trying to run it offline. So then I think maybe a virus, so I go to PC Cillins online scan and same thing now: "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must close" So I am thinking virus for sure, but then I get McAfee's online scan to work and I come up clean. I tried to change the NIC, and tried every BIOS setting I could, but no matter what it can't run an instant messenger. Oh I checked the firewall too so that aint it.

So here I am, my only conclusion is the board is somehow bad, because the programs all work fine with my old setup and every piece of hardware except the motherboard was in use in the old system. I am planning to call and say something like "Hey, I broke the heatsink tab, but the board was bad anyway." and hope I can RMA once more. Maybe one of you has a fresh answer to the puzzle so that's why I am here. Thanks.

Why would moving the wrong jumper when trying to reset the bios panic you? The proceedure is to remove power from the rig, move the jumper, wait, move it back, restore power. If you moved the wrong jumper under these conditions, you were simply back to the original state. If you moved jumpers while the mobo was powered, you may have damaged the mobo yourself. Sounds like you had a software or driver problem anyway.

I know how to clear the CMOS. I had the wrong jumper and since I didn't clear it, it failed to boot, thus panic, thinking the chip was dead up until I discovered it was the wrong jumper.

As for software conflicts, I have been installing Windows and all my programs the same way for over 20 installs before, and it always worked fine, the only difference being the board. I actually installed windows and the programs 3 times to be sure it wasn't that. The only conclusion I can come to is the board is screwy somehow. Interestingly it played UT 2K3 like a dream.
