Let them keep sending you letters.

When a collection agency comes asking, ask them just what the hell you owe progressive for.

On a similar note, I also have progressive. I always pay in full a six month intervals. About two months after renewal, I always f#$%ing get a bill and have to call them and bust their balls. I am switching this time, I hope the bastards send me a $400 check. :|

I used to have Progressive and I was happy with them. But my agent got be a better deal from another company when I got my new truck.

If they sent you the check, it is their fault. It's not like you didn't pay a bill. They sent you the money. It's their mistake, IMHO, they don't have a legal leg to stand on.

They do have a right to their money, but you can argue with them and tell them that you thought they were sending you a insurance refund for either charging you to much or you over paid. They will probably still ask for their money, but you can argue to see if they will finally back down. However, don't talk to the little person that answers the phone, get a supervisor. If they say its a mistake then tell them to send you a letter stating why it was paid, and now why it is a mistake.

Progressive is SUCK!! I can't stand that insurance company. My car was hit by a teenager and he left the scene. Someone got his tag number and left it at our parking deck managers office. I got it and the cop showed up at his door. He had progressive and it to me forever to get them to do their job. They gave me such a run around when it pertains to lost wages. I finally won, but I argued everyday for about two weeks.

First off, you don't have a legal leg to stand on. It's just like if the bank adds an amount to your balance by mistake. The money is not yours, and the law says you are responsible for knowing what is, or is not, yours.

You could, however, successfully argue that you thought it was some sort of refund, and thus thought you were ligitimately owed the money. You could then make some sort of payment plan with them (like $100 per month for 4 months or something).

I have progressive myself, and they just raised their rates significantly. I'm looking into switching to another company (Nationwide or Prudential).

Give the damn money back. It's not your money, you had no business cashing it.
