Sooo, I landed a new job! Yay!

I promised myself that if I get-er-done, I'll buy myself a new camera finally (my Nikon D70 seems to have a sensor crapping out - dynamic range is getting smaller and smaller).

Initially I wanted D90, but with the potential of a new job, I can actually afford a D300. I am also leaving for a vacation in a month, and wanted to use the new camera there. No sooner than that Nikon announces a D300s with tons of improvements.... but it's not coming out until September.

So, what do I do? Any way to get smth better than my D70 for 2 weeks of vacation, then come back and get the new D300s?

Help me the mighty ATOT!

Stick with your current camera for now, and wait to get the best thing you can later on.

IF you wanted the D300, might as well wait for a D300S unless you have a $$ making assignment that makes up for the cost.

That and it sounds like you should save up for the cam first...instead of just buying a new camera

I do have the money set aside :) It's my conscience that needed persuasion to let me buy D300 rather than D90...

D300 you can get for $1100 used. D300s is, what, $1800? $700 can get you some pretty good glass...

You can always rent, but thats just throwing money away.

Why stop with the D300 or D300s? Go for the D700, you know you want to, :).

It's just getting silly after that - I know that it's my hobby. I am not planning to make any money out of it, and probably never will. There's a clear need to replace my D70. Realistically, D90 would probably fit 90% of my needs. D300 is a top level camera for me, and the price limit where I stop :)

D300, save the money for glass - the better sensor is worth it imho, esp in low light situations where u dont want to use flash

I have no knowledge of Nikons. Heck, I'm still only learning photography as time permits (work + daughter = no time). However, the way I look at purchases like this is, if you buy a D300 (or D90), you will be using it now. How much will a D300S really benefit you considering that you lose out on two or more (depending on availability) months of enjoyment as well as having to fork over more money. If the answer is that the D300S isn't that much better vs the D300 (or D90) then the answer is clear. Get the new camera now. If you wait for "the next big thing" you'll be waiting forever.

Okay you know what, I thought about it for a second.

Does what the D300S offer over the D300 make it worthwhile to you?

What will the D300 do for you that the D90 won't? If it indeed is 90% of things, I'd go with a D90.

I'm struggling right now to decide K20D or a K7 so I'm kind of in the same boat. I could grab the 20D for ~650, and the K7 is ~1300. The biggest difference isn't noise of IQ, or noise, but features: faster FPS, better SR, faster AF, and other small niceties (electronic level, etc.).

I'd say save your money.

However, on the flip side, if you only upgrade once in a blue moon (4-5 years?), might as well get something nice ;) I'll assume you got a D70 when it came out...so you probably have a good 4-5 years on it.

So scratch that earlier comment - D300 ;) D300S may not be worth it for the dual CF slots....
