Is it as sharp as the 55-250?

Of course each copy can vary... but these lenses are tack sharp.... up until about 250-70mm then they get real soft around 300mm... but still not bad though. You would not notice unless you made a big print.

Really? I thought the 75-300 was actually a fairly weak lens and that the 70-300 surpassed it being quite sharp until, as you describe, it gets to 300mm.

I thought the older 75-300 IS USM was pretty un-sharp (like the 75-300 non IS), but that the 70-300 IS USM was much better?

If that's true, wouldn't the 55-250 IS be sharper and have a better IS system (3 stop vs. 2 stops without pan/tripod detection)?

canon has made a total of 7 75-300 lenses in EF mount. the IS USM version appears to have been the predecessor to the current 70-300 IS USM (the first IS lens, btw). so it could be a pretty decent lens.

I read the review on the-digital-picture and he says this about the 75-300mm IS USM:

If you care about excellent quality, sharp photos, the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens is not for you. And Photoshop cannot enhance details that are not there. If your needs are not demanding, you might be very happy with a 75-300 IS.

I would have kept the 55-250mm

My bad... misread the title. I have the 70-300.
