i got a 2500 in the mail without the black circle pads and a cracked core? (pics)

It looks like the black pads were torn off. Is this ok? Can I just throw a heatsink fan on top and all will be well? Or do I need to get a shim? Also, it came with thermal grease already on the core. is this ok?

EDIT: I removed the thermal grease and found a core that appers to be cracked

where did you get it from? it should be ok as long as you're careful... thermalright heatsinks come with extra pads if it worries you. that's pretty lazy of them not to clean it off before they sold it to you. you better make sure it works in the first place.

I'd post the trader's name so everyone knows how careless that person is when considering buying something from that person.
That's just laziness... you can't even clean your thermal goop off before shipping a processor that you sell? Come on.

If you use acetone or Goo Off or Goo Gone, do a final cleaning with alcohol because both of those leave residue behind, alcohol is the only one of those listed that fully evaporates and doesn't leave any residue behind.

Well, I just cleaned off the cpu, and it looks like what appers to be a hairline crack right down the core. This sucks. I don't even want to test it. Where should I post this user's name in the forums? FS/T?

Do you have a scanner? If so, maybe you could post a closeup scan of the crack.
How well was the CPU packaged?

I'm going to take a pic. The cpu was in the amd cpu flip case, then wrapped in bubble wrab, then placed in a plastic data tape box, then wrapped again in bubble wrap, then placed in a fedex box. Good packaging.

I sent the seller a PM asking for a refund, as I don't even really want to test it. it seems like a problem waiting to happen even if it does work. I would think it's kind of obvious that the seller knew about the crack, because he specifically told me he put the paste on there. Even put a note on the cpu saying "Thermal Paste is AS5 the best out there" ...maybe he was hoping I would just throw it in the machine and then the next time I took out the chip I'd think it was my own fault.

Considering how well the chip was packaged, it seems shady to me. What kind of heatware did this person have? Good luck getting a refund.

I'm going to wait on giving the name until I can find out what happened. Maybe he didn't know. Even if, say, he does refund my money, do I still give negative heat?

Nah i wouldn't if he refunds your money. Then he did the right thing and these things can happen. On the other hand if he doesn't....:disgust:

Did you pay with PayPal (or a similar service)? If so, you can request a refund from them. It will give the seller a week (or so) to "fight" or respond to the refund. If he gives good proof that it wasnt his fault, you get no refund. But if he does nothing, or gives u the refund, then u are payed!

That is just... I can't even think of a word for it... it's a shame someone would intentially rip you off like that.

*EDIT* Now we know why the thermal compound was left on it... to hide the crack. I tell ya... I would post this seller's name even if he does refund my money... trying to sell a destroyed CPU is low and I wouldn't want to do business with anyone who would ever try that.

**EDIT** daveymark, I'd like to know who this person is whether you post it publicly or not. When I look for something I want I often come to the FS/FT forums here thinking it's a bit safer than buying from eBay considering most people who are members on this site are fellow enthusiasts.
