This local church collects old computer crap from all kinds of local places and ships it off to nigeria for some mission they have out there (are computers really important in africa?

), well alot of it they just let people take, I went over today and picked up a Mac LC III, a Power Mac 6100/60, and 8 assorted old ass powerbooks, some of them I can't test since they take a power adapter that I don't have, but I did get a chance to test 4 520's and 520c's, the least jacked up one was a 520c, 12MB ram, ethernet - but I need an adapter (uuai to rj45 - $10 on ebay), The LC III is in really nice shape, it looks like it was barely used at all (insides have nearly no dust, look almost new from factory), and it has an ethernet card, however the hard drive is god awful loud :(. I didn't get a chance to play with the 6100, it uses some funky ass old apple monitor connector so I couldn't test it at all. I may go back again and see if I can grab an adapter, I know they had one. I'll also have to get an adb keyboard and mouse.

Anyways I'm not sure what exactly I'm gonna do with any of these, so far I plan on grabbing the aaui->rj45 jack for the powerbook and putting netbsd on it ASAP

so if you have no use for them... why did you get them?
they could be very useful in schools in developing countries. i suggest doing the ethical thing and giving them back

Maybe I'm missing something here but this all sounds wrong to me.

People donate their computers and expect that they'll go to needy people who might have never seen a computer before, yet you guys go through and take what you want? So essentially you're stealing from the needy and the church?

I hope I'm way off track here...

I got them because most of them had little notes that said "doesn't power up", "screen dead", etc, and I figured I'd have to find the working parts and piece a complete one together or something along those lines. Turns out that all 4 I tested were 100% fine, I guess these people were on crack or something.

I'm not really sure I buy into the whole technologizing-developing-countries thing. These people are dying of aids and starvation, why should we be complicating their lives with computers?

And I am by no means depriving anyone. The guy was literally insisting I take them all. They have a room, oh, probably 20 feet by 30 feet, 10 feet or so high, and the room is STACKED with computer crap. I mean, up to the ceiling. There's a tiny little walkway by the door, other than that, you literally have to climb this mountain of computers to get to anything. It's insane. And this was just the one room I saw - there's another.

To reply to Yzzim: Yes, my original post perhaps was worded badly. They have a massive overabundance of computers and every couple months this guy sends out emails to the local LUG and MUG saying "come take this crap away".
