I posted something like this acouple of months back but had some $$$ problems but now i'm getting acouple of extra $$$ so now i can spend.

Anyway i need something really fast & want it to be something at least with a P4 2.4c.I'm gonna be using this pc to do alot of encoding & my program takes up 100% of my cpu when doing so.I know acouple of things more less on what i want but need some input of stuff like what memorey & how much should i get. Also like what case & moniter as i'll like to get everything in a silver color to match my tv/dvd & stand.

So plz feel free to post here on what should i get.

Thanks in advance.

P.S.

Here's the stuff i know i wanna get already -

P4 2.4C +
2- WD 120GB SE 8MB Cache = 250gigs
Pioneer A05 - ALREADY GOT
Lite-On 40x + cdrw

It's gonna be tough to stay under $1000 for that system.

2.4c +865pe + 2 120gb drives will put you at $500 without ram, case, vidcard, case, kb, mouse, monitor, removable storage drives.

I'll try my best...*sigh*

P4 2.4C - $172
ABIT IS7-E - $96
2x 120GB WD JB - $204
Microsoft Natural Multimedia Keyboard & Wheel Mouse Optical Value Pack - $38 after shipping
AOC Unbranded 17" CRT Monitor Model D1770 - $119 after shipping
CDRW - Look on your weekend flyers for a Free after Rebate CDRW drive....
2x 256MB Corsair XMS OEM - $140
Sapphire radeon 9600 128MB - $132 - actually, the 256MB version is only $5 more at newegg so I'd get that...
Total: $861

Obviously, that is without a case and PSU. I'd look for an Antec PSU if not a case from Antec with an Antec PSU. You should be fine with a PSU over 350W from Antec.

Any money left over should be spent in upgrading your monitor and/or memory. Also, will you be gaming on this at all? If not, I'd go for a 64mb Radeon 8500 or 9100, whatever is cheaper, and spend the money on 2x 512MB Corsair XMS sticks or something. The extra memory will really help out video editing.

What are all the hard drives for anyway? I would serious look into a brand name moniter and along with a good case. It shouldnt be impossible to have a kickass p4 system under $1k. I assume this includes keyboard moniter mouse etc?

I helped a friend of mine build a 2.4 P4 system for like 1100.

2.4C - $170
Abit IS7 - $104
2x512 HyperX PC3200 $125.00 per stick @ googlegear
Samsung Syncmaster 19" 955DF CRT - $200
Sapphire 9800 non-pro 128MB - $244
WD 120 GB special edition 8MB cache - $103
Premodded steel case & PSU he picked out - $70
DVD-ROM drive - $30

If you're not using the machine for gaming or maybe just a little gaming, you could save quite a bit getting a gf3 or some other card in the $70 range and use that for keeping the price down @ $1000 and get a 80GB harddrive if you need more than 120 gigs.

Buy one 120GB drive now, one later? What about a monitor? What do you want to use this for if not gaming? All of these would go into a recommendation. If you want a 2.4C, do you plan to o/c? Do you need anything special from the MoBo (like IDE RAID to run those 2XWD 120GB in a RAID0 config)? These are questions you should answer before committing to any particular hardware.

1.Well i'm gonna need more then 120gigs so i thought i'll be better off by getting 2 of them & not just lets say like 1 250 as i can also save $$$.

2.As for the moniter i could use anything.I'm not gonna be using this system for anytpe of gaming or movie watching. So i could use something simple.

3.Well i'll like to get it o/c but i don't know much about that & don't wanna burn out my system as many people have told me i could.

4.Again i'm not sure about if i should put the drives in raid as i was thinking putting 1 as my prim master & ther other as my 2nd master.

I'm not all that smart about putting together a pc really.

If putting the drives is raid0 will be faster & better then i'll do that.

But as stated above i need this system to be really fast as what i'm gonna be using this for takes up 100% of my cpu when using it.I also want it to look nice like in a silver color.

RAID 0 will almost certainly be more hassle than its worth.

I'd recommend buying some of your parts used from the FS/T forum, you could save a few bucks that way.

So, it's solely for encoding and recoring DVDs? I think a better forum for this question would be:
AVS Forum

Yes, this is one of the applications where a RAID arrangement should be considered, however not an IDE RAID. What I'd recommend would be an S-ATA RAID instead, which would give the best performance focus for what you're saying you want to do. You can pick up really cheap monitors (under $20) from Goodwill. Let me see if I can ppart something together, pricing from NewEgg:
Performance Series II Mid Tower $80
Abit IS7 $107
P4C 2.4GHz $172
2XSeagate 120GB S-ATA Drives $240
LG Electronics DVD Combo 52X24X52 CD-RW $68
Windows XP $94
Keyboard $8
Mouse $5
2X512MB PC3200 RAM $178

Which leaves $28 for the video card.

EDIT: The way you'd arrange your drives is the two HDs on Primary IDE, the two opticals on the secondary (with the A05 as the master). What about speakers? Make that $28 for video card and headphones.

Get some corsair XMS ram or maybe some HyperX ram. Anything PC3200 or faster (in these brands) is good if you want to overclock, but on a P4
you should get some ram with faster speeds since PC3200 is 200mhz rated and the P4c are at 200fsb already.

If you want a silver case, the Chieftec dragon cases look good and come in that color with a door on the front so you don't have to paint your drives,
and they are pretty affordable as well as in aluminum too with a psu (even though it's not an antec, the one I have stays very stable to spec).

Actually according to Windows, 2 120gb wd's will get you 228gb!?

My WD1200JB shows up as 111GB in Windows, so if I had 2, I'm guessing it'd be 111x2=222.

For hard drives, I'd consider getting a Raptor for your OS, programs, etc., and then an IDE drive for storage. It'd be a good speed improvement.
