This is suppose to be a simple network. Connecting 2 computers via crossover cable to share files and internet connection. Both comps are running winXP pro. Im using Linksys and a Realtek nic. Comp1 has a linksys and realtek, (linksys cable connection, realtek is for network)

I have ran the network setup wizard on both comps and set the same workgroup (MSHOME). I then right clicked on a folder on both comps and shared it. I also map networked the drives on both computers. And yes the cable is connected properly.

When i opened Network Places there is only the workgroup but not the other computer. This is the same on both computers.

Many people told me just to get a router and save me the headaches, they said just plug the cable modem and the 2 computers to the router and the router will do everything for me.
 
For the initial setting, disable all software Firewall (including WinXP native
ICF); disable any active Virus scan or any other utility that might intercept
Network Traffic.

Your problem probably stems from user, and sharing settings of WinXP Pro.

BTW, every body is right you better off buying Cable/DSL Router, but you have to learn how to configure your Network, the Router is just a passive piece of Metal Plastic, and Silicone, and will not do anything for you.

all the firewalls are turned off, i have no anti virus installed. I have tried those websites and still i cant see my computers in the workgroup.

Maybe because one of the computers is a compaq heheh ( I know i know )
 
this may not help but some people report reinstalling their network card can somtimes help with problems where everything seems configuired correctly. Especially in winxp.
 
I did this very thing pretty recently. For your Local Area Connection Properties, make sure Client for MS Networks, File and Printer Sharing..., are enabled along with TCP/IP. Also, make sure you are logging into each computer and not pressing cancel on login.
 
First off check to make sure that you have some basic connection between the machines:

On the computer that is connected to the cable modem.

Open a command prompt by going to: Start -> Run -> and type cmd

At the command prompt, type: ipconfig /all
This should show you the TCP/IP configuration for both of your adapters.
Write down the IP address assigned to your Realtek (crossover cable) network card (it should be a 169. something or something close to that.)

On the computer that is connected to the crossover cable only.

Open a command prompt by going to: Start -> Run -> and type cmd

At the command prompt, type: ipconfig /all

Record the IP address assigned to this computer.

At the command prompt type: ping addressOfTheComputerThatYouAreConnectingTo
(addressOfTheComputerThatYouAreConnectingTo is the IP address that you found in the first few steps on the computer you are using for the cable modem connection.)

If you get a 'reply' from the packets being sent to the other computer then you know that you have a connection, if not then there is a problem with one of the network cards (hardware or driver), the crossover cable, or possible the IP Addressing.

Post your results back here and we can advise further after you find out if you are getting any connection at all...

ok when i open workgroup i only see my computer not the other computer. Also what do you mean by logging into each computer. I dont get a screen at startup to connect to a computer.

When i pinged the realteck nic ip for this comp on my other computer i got "Request timed out" three times

packets sent 4 lost 4 100% loss
 
You're not logging on to these computers? How did you arrange that? Have you never created any other users and are not using passwords?

Please reply back with the following information from both of your computers:

IP Address:
Subnet Mask:
Gateway:

(You can find the information by using the ipconfig /all command I posted about earlier.)
 
Let me get this straight:

You want network 2 pc's with a Xover cable to share files and one will connect to the internet and share it.

This is so easy it isn't even funny.

I assume everything is functioning correctly.

The PC that is connected to the internet I will call A. Make sure A can access the net. Then install ICS.

Make sure that the other PC (B) is connected to A and turned on. Once ICS is setup on A, try connecting to the net with B. If this works then you are half way home.

This is the end of part one. Get back with the results and then we will continue with part 2 (setting up the lan).
 
ICS comes with the old windows (on the original CD). WinXP has it in.

If you bothered to look at my previous post (look up), you will see the answer glaring at you.

What Operating System is on the two computers?

What are the IP addresses of the two computers?
 
1st comp is on winXP pro and comp2 has win98se on it. I formatted Comp2 because i was getting a dll error so im trying win98se now.

Comp1 = 192.168.0.1
Comp2 = 169.254.172.46

When i go to network properties there is no other computer except my. Same thing on comp1. I didnt put any ip address in TCP/IP setting, everything is set to automatic. I installed file and printer sharing on comp2.

I have the same workgroup on both computers. I made a new user in Computer management and set the password to never terminate. All the firewalls are disabled. ANd i do log in with the user name on comp2 that i made on comp1.
