I get this error when trying to install Office XP or Office 2000: Missing E:\OFFICE1.CAB file or it cannot be read.

Doh!

Hmm.... Sounds like a corrupt cd. Try copying the entire cd to a hard drive and install from there.

Yeah, my friend had this same problem. He built a brand new computer, had Win2K on it, took my OFFICE CD's, and tried installing them, and no go. It worked just fine on mine. We never did figure out what was wrong with it. That was with Office 2000.

Sorry.

just copy the contents of the cd to a folder on your hard drive and install from there. it'll work fine. it does that for office 2000 and office xp on mine. it's weird but at least i can get it working.

Is your office 2k cd an oem version or retail. The reason I ask is that some oem versions are made with really cheapo cds. I have had the problem you are describing. Since I am a reseller I have the luxury of having more than one copy of office as well as multiple cdrom drives to test with. The problem turned out to be a combination of the cheapo oem cd which the Affrey & Mitsumi cdrom drive would not read correctly 90% of the time. I could load a retail box version of office with the Affey & Mitsumi cdrom drives. I could load the cheapo version of office with a Sony cdrom drive. Why, you ask, I have no clue, it just worked out that way.
After I switched vendors for my office cds the problem went away.
