I get on to desktop but only have wallpaper and cursor... nothing else!!!

🙁 Everytime I boot into win98 my desktop comes up but only the wallpaper and cursor are there. I can move my cursor around and when I hit CTRL ALT DEL there are no tasks in the task list. I think this problem came after I installed the VIA 4 in1. I deleted every VIA system file but I still have the same problem. I also disabled both the onboard audio and sound card just in case. I can also get into safe mode with all files intact. My system consists of:

Tbird 950mhz
MSI K7t Turbo
384MB ram
Inno 3d Geforce 2 MX
Aureal Vortex 2 Sndcrd
HPS 56k modem
Seagate EIDE

I don't mind formatting as long as there's some way I can save some of my files. Thanks for any help. 🙂
 
Dont be so quick to format. Try reinstalling windows first. Use a win 98 boot disk with CD rom support, then run setup.exe off the win98 cd. Windows will install a fresh copy over itself and leave your files and programs intact. This operation takes about 30-60 min depending on the speed of your PC. I used to do this about every other month or so when I had win98 cause I would always find a way to hose it up. Good Luck
