So I finally landed a PS3 MGS4 bundle the other day and sat down to play it tonight. While running around w/ Niko, I get the urge to toss my dinner. This is not even a FPS game, which I do not play due to motion sickness. The controls are a bit different from GTA:SA, so it takes a little getting use to the movement on foot. I hope it passes.

I don't get this while playing GTA:SA on PS2. I hope it doesn't happen when I play MGS4.

I've never gotten motion sickness. I can't really ride coasters due to getting nauseous on quick changes of height. For some reason I also get a similar feeling when playing a game and my char does a quick change of height like failing off a cliff.

My wife gets this some times so we've gotten pretty good at trying to fight it.

  • - Turn on more lights.
    - Sit farther away from the TV.
    - Dramamine, Benadryl or Ginger pills.

Yeah, this. Especially if you have a bigass TV. I had a little trouble at first but got used to it eventually. Plus, as you get better at controlling the character there will be less wild camera shifts, which helps a lot.

Also, make sure you have your view zoomed all the way out.

Hahaha oh man. I have never thought to take dramamine for this. But yeah, most of the newer GTA's give me motion sickness. Some games do, some games don't, it's all about how the camera functions. Like with COD4 I have no problems at all.

GTA4 doesn't give me motion sickness problems, just boredom ones.

OTOH, I can't play Half-Life 2 or Timesplitters 2 to save my life. Even 30 minutes with any of those games makes me nauseous. :(

Sheep, I too can't play HL2 for that same reason. 10 minutes playing that game on my PC had me tasting lunch for the second time.

I used to get massive motion sickness when playing Prey, constant breaks and lots of water are a good measure in addition to everything else recommended here.

Just certain games do it to me as well. I remember half-life zero something giving it to me while I can play doom 3 and counter-strike for hours.

I only get it in GTA4 when indoors thanks to the crappy camera (i think).

I got nauseous the first time I played Descent but I didn't want to stop playing so I just pushed through. When I was done I laid down on a couch for a bit to get everything settled down (I had a really bad headache by that time) and I haven't had a problem since.

I can't play HL2 either. A couple minutes into the game and my head will be spinning to the point i wanted to barf:disgust:. I don't have a problem with COD4, BioShock, or Gears of War.

I'm glad I never had this problem. Way back when, I use to play one on one Goldeneye on N64 with someone. It was always game over after half an hour cause he got naseous. However, even though I'm usually ok, the motion blur that's now very popular in games (especially GTA4) does start making me feel queasy. I doubt you can turn it off, so maybe it's best to sit farther away and take longer breaks.... Or change your play style. Drive like grandpa, but bring lots of guns to keep people off your back;).

I sat farther away from the TV and try to look at the whole picture instead of focusing on just Niko. That helped a lot. I still get a little motion sickness for certain actions, but it has improved over yesterday.

Gonna play some MGS4 in all its glory when my HDMI cable comes in maybe tomorrow.

I have this same problem. I had to force my way through HL2...I felt so horrible after playing it (massive headache, nauseous, etc), but I felt it was a compromise worth making.

However, try setting your FOV to 90 instead of the default. Apparently that helps a lot of people. I have yet to really try it, though.

Man, I feel your pain. I love playing games, but having to give up an entire genre (FPS) because playing them make you want to puke. Now certain third-person perspective games are doing it too, which double suck.

Though I was watching G4 E3 coverage today and they were showing off new FPS game "Mirror's Edge". The guy from the development team actually said they researched "simulation sickness" resulting from playing FPS games and what they did with this game is to a put a dot in the middle of the screen so you'll have a point to focus on, thus resulting in less sickness. They also increase the field-of-view to 90 degrees instead of 50 degrees like many FPS games. Guess I'll give this game a rent when it's released and see if those things will actually reduce motion sickness.

I get motion sickness from most FPS, and any other game where there is a lot of fast motion.
GTA:VC on the PS2, made me sick quicker than any other game ever did, so I've avoided playing any of the others.

The only thing I've found that works 100% is Dramamine. Ginger works only about 60% of the time for me. I got this big bottle of it though, because it was so cheap. I always try it first, and if I still get sick, I'll stop playing, then pop a dramamine. Any of the other "cures" are a waste of time, for me.

MGS4 only caused me a problem near the end, so I think you should be ok.
