I get error message upon startup of old computer: says hard drive is bad?!?!?!

I get an error message that says "File allocation table bad, drive c" . What does this mean?
 
You could try: attaching as a slave drive (in a functioning machine) & run a Windows disk repair utility on it. Then try booting again.
