He guides me to a site that will install a file:

Support-LogMeInRescue.exe

Should I run this?

I think this thread has more than run its course. Everyone has gotten to rag on Muse and he has been able to tell everyone to FO. If he still has problems, we have a security category.

He says he's going to connect me to a microsoft technician but he refuses to do so. I yell at him and he insists I install this, says the ms technician is Shane Watson. His accent is strong, sounds Indian, says he's in south east asia. Says there is a big virus problem, is this a scam?????

Someone called you on the phone to ask you to install some file? Gotta be the worst ever scam attempt. You'd think it would be more productive for scammers to pretend to be a bank and ask for account information.

I actually participated in something like this ~10 years ago when Nimda was wreaking havoc on everything. Comcast (then @Home I think?) was calling their customers and informing them that they were infected. It was a similar thing - Called, gave instructions to download a cleaning tool.

So while it's not completely outside the realm of possibility I would be cautious.

Muse,

You might want to go over to fraudwatchers and do some research.

But first ask yourself a few questions.

When was the last time that a stranger called you and offered to do you a favor?

Who do you think pays that person that called you?

How do you think that they make money?

Best of luck!

this is one of the most serious virus's going around in years. if not taken care of not only will you risk complete data loss but also your personal data will be spread globally to hackers around the world.

Yeah, you are putting me on, right? That's basically what this guy was telling me. I go ahead and download this file and run it. It basically seems to give these guys control of my computer. It shows me some stuff, it shows me what looks like an event viewer (presumably mine), and shows errors. Someone circles the figure for how many and it says 8262 or something like that and this guy on the phone says he can't see the figure and asks me what it is. He says he can't see it, asks me what it says! He says if under 5000 they consider it minor but if over that it's serious and I will have to pay for the service. Doesn't say how much. I'm getting more suspicious. He want me to hang on and they will do some stuff to rid my computer of problems. His English stinks, which is why I was yelling at him to connect me to this "Shane ____" guy from Microsoft who he kept saying he was going to connect me with. Finally I figure I better check this shit out before I let it go further. He's told me that since I have 4 computers (he asked me how many) and on the same network they would have to check each of the computers for this virus problem which is compromising at least this computer. The one I was on was a Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit laptop, but my other 3 are XP. I finally say "call me back" I have to use the bathroom. He asks when, I say in an hour (I figure that will give me time to do some research here, at least look in my event viewers), I terminate the call, finally get the app that's controlling my box to terminate and shut down the machine. I'm using one of my other machines to type this message. This XP laptop doesn't seem to have anything like what he was showing me in the "event viewer" which may have been a mock up, a phony, not mine.

My phone rang 2-3 times within 5-10 minutes of my hanging up with this guy. I did not answer...

They have been calling random people at work. Spoke with a couple buddies, and they are saying the same thing. All recently too.
I think someone setup a massive call center.

Of course you do not do anything but ask respectable virus scanner providers first.
You are joking right ?
Do not fall for that.
That is asking to be scammed if you do that !
Never trust a stranger on the phone to ask you to install software to protect you from a "virus".

Just in case you are making a joke :

Dude I wasn't joking and the only reason I ran the damn download is the first two responders in this thread said, basically:

1. Sounds legit
2. What do you have to lose?

I was on the phone with this guy I didn't have time to fuck around and do research, so I followed his instructions. Seems weird, but not unreasonable, but I'd have felt a lot better about it if I got an American Microsoft technician on the phone who sounded reasonable. I could understand an Asian hireling sounding like he didn't know what was really going on, just reading his script, which this guy did sound like. But he was incredibly persistent, it was weird!!!!!

There goes my phone again, I'm not answering. It hangs up after one ring. This is weird shit. I just registered at fraudwatchers, confirmed, but it won't let me post for some reason.

I've never been called by anyone before who asked me to download and install something.

:ninja::ninja::ninja::ninja::ninja: People shouldn't be allowed to pull people's legs like this. I mean you, alien.

oh my god, you were serious...

and you downloaded that stuff? fucking unplug the internet cable now and do a restore or something.

no, you weren't, were you?

Ok muse, you need a virtual bitch slapping if you actually went and installed this.
OK, I'm a dumb ass. :hmm: Someone say something nice, please.

Should I really do a restore? When I shut down the machine it did an update install of ~9 items and shut itself down. It's still off.

your avatar is cool.

i would def look for whatever was installed, uninstall it and then go to your last good restore point and restore your system but im a noob. there may be better ways to check. im pretty sure whatever was installed was probably not a good thing tho. you may have a keylogger, who knows what else so if it were me, yes, i would unplug my intarwebz until i checked some stuff.
