I gave my Ti4200 away yesterday.

I have a friend who plays games on his computer (he's stuck on BF1942 now), and I haven't touched a single game (other than q3a) since I upgraded from my gf2gts to my gf4 ti4200 3 months ago. So I gave him my card, and took his Gf4mx 440. He's happy, and I can still play quake 3 at nice framerates.

The only thing that bothers me is that the gf4mx has a passive heatsink, and it was literally burning hot after a 2 hours of q3. I'll look around and see if I have any old cpu fans lying around so I can stick them on it.

i know it gets hot, but it was designed not to use a fan. if its not locking up, dont worry about it. and btw, alot of people slam the geforce4mx, but i think it is a good card.

I completely agree. These days even a Ti4200 isn't good enough for some. But my new MX is doing just as well as my Ti was.

The card is rock stable. But I just feel uneasy knowing its running so hot. I'm in no state of mind to go pay money and get a heatsink/fan for this thing. All I want to do is go through my bag of computer parts, and if I find a fan small enough to fit on this card, then I will put it on.

Hehe, now the card to slam is probably the FX5200 series. Sure it can run DX9.0, but it is unbelievably slower compared to the much older geforce 4 mx.

if ur 440 starts overheating then get better case cooling. its amazing how case cooling brings the temp of all the componets down.

I leave the side of my case off. I can't think of any better way to cool the case. Its quiet, efficient, and lets me mess with the insides of the computer without having to take the case off everytime.

But still, it gets *really* hot. I doubt that any case cooling will make it the temperature I want it to be (i.e luke warm).

I just thought of this. I have a geforce 2 gts with an active cooler. Will the heatsink/fan from that fit the gf4mx card? I'm at work, so I cant exactly pull them out and measure them. Any of you know if the holes on the cards are the same length apart?

having the case open might make the components hotter, for air will not be circulating as it should. that is if you have a case fan

Unless the floor fan is really quiet, I don't want one. I can't stand that kind of a noise for the long periods of time that I have my computer on.

That should work just fine. I would reccomend buying some quality thermal interface material though.
Like others have said, it is designed to work fine at those temps. Putting active cooling on it should give you better overclocking as well.
