I gave a lousy tip for lousy service.

First, he forgot to put in the order for my food...after waiting 45 minutes I had to flag him down...

and then I had to ask TWICE for my bill. He never stopped to ask if I needed anything...didn't even give me silverware, although all I ordered was nachos and a beer.

Bah...

would you have tipped him at all?

Whatever the change was to round up to a dollar. I'm a waiter myself and know first-hand we need to do a good job to deserve a decent tip.

If it was really busy then poor service is excusable as long as he was nice to you. If he was just screwing around he wouldn't have gotten anything from me.

My coworker and I went out for sushi and the bill came out to $25. The waitress took a while to get us our bill as we got up and looked around for her. We left her $.13 in tip

The problem is, I'm not sure they get the message when I leave a bad tip. People my age aren't expected to tip all that well yet I usually do. The only time someone gets less than 15% (it's usually closer to 20%) is if they were awful.

How old are you? The restaurants me and my friends visited regularly in High School (Applebees in particular) always took care of our group of kids. We usually tipped in excess of 20%, and if we left less then 15%, they knew they fvcked up big time. If you're a regular its much easier to get the message across.

Well then next time you could just vocally let the waiter/waitress know. That sure would be a shock to any of my former co-workers or myself. But it does get the message across.

20-25% if the service is great, and the occasional note for a manager
15% if the server is just ok or acceptable
10% and ask to speak to a manager if the service was poor or the food was bad.

You tipped him one dollar to much if you ask me.

I once tipped this waiter $0.30 for terrible service. The next time I went back to the same restaurant, I found out he was fired :D

$1, IMHO, is generous!
