I fvcking hate my computer! *UPDATE: everything's pretty smooth now!*

Editing videos' really causing my computer to slow down like crazy.. I have to do a clean install of XP every month .. it starts of fine but then really slow down during the month.. Is win2000 less like this? I really hate this.. I have a speedy computer but opening I.E. take a minute sometimes!

(I defrag every day.. the next day the drive is 50%+ fragmented )

UPDATE: 03/09/04

I'm too broke to buy the ram right now but am considering it... I did do a few things and my systems is far less sluggish.. Here's what I did:
-Disabled all of XPs visual styles.. My system basically looks like win2k now
-Move all of my programs to one drive, temps files (and the paging file) to another, and my video clips to another.
-Figured out why my harddrive was so fragmented everyday: system restore kept writing these huge files to my hd! Disabled it and, bingo, problem solved

So that's about it... Every now and then I format my temp drive (boot from a bootCD) and everything is pretty smooth for now.. I will get the ram eventually though.

go to another forum for this, like software or general hardware. youll probably get more help. but try using a spyware removal tool to see if that helps. also, increase your page file size if you can

2.4B p4,
512MB ram
2x80 gb 7200rpm hds, 1x40 (system, video files are on the 80s)

I do have windows on one drive and the video gear on another.. it still slows down after just a few weeks of working.. Have no idea what's up.. A clear install ALWAYS fixes the slow downs..

My mac has a gig of ram, I just can't afford the good software for it.. Ironic, huh? (I was able to get a good deal on avid xpress for the pc)

You need more ram, and you need to separate your OS from your files you are working with.
A secondary controller would help. Also, if you are doing editing, switch to SCSI.

Get another HD dedicated for ONLY video editing. Nothing else.

I mean make your swap file on a seperate partition, your windows swap and your video editing program's swap if you can in your software can do that.

Final Cut Pro is god huh? ;) Have you checked if your school offers special pricing? Talk to the Prof they can usually hook you up with a "legal" version if you're nice to them :D

On a different HD from your OS makes it much more responsive imo.

I use to some video editing (not much now) and Win2kpro ran perfectly on my machine.

Get 2 new hard drives. One to store the source, one to store the destination. Keep windows etc on the original drive.

I'm sure your computer hates you.

Buy more RAM. Or get a Mac. Or stop complaining of things over which you have full control.

Abit BH7 .. Or something like that.. I'm a bit short on cash but I'll seriously consider getting some more ram... Thanks guys for the suggestions - I'm reformatting/reinstalling everythign tonight - I have a raid control somewhere but my raid crashed on me once and the results were not pleasant.. i may use it again though and back up to DVD-r more often... So this is what i'll do..
40 gigger - win XP/programs
80x2 - raid - video editing

Simple but I hope it's effective.. I'll upgrade to 1 gig in the very near future... I'm going to try very hard to get a FCP used or through a student deal as well... I have this powerful mac sitting right here that I never use.

Thanks guys! you've been very helpful, which is kinda the norm ;)
