Opteron 165: $330
PNY 7900GT: $330
DFI Lanparty NF4 Expert: $160
Fortron FX700-GLN: $165

Replacing:
A64 3000+ 754pin - can't stand single core processing anymore, gah! Too many things going on at once...
EVGA 6800NU - Oblivion looks like ass.
Shuttle AN51R NF3 - eh
Fortron 500W Blue Storm - won't be able to handle the new system. Especially with my 6 hard drives, 2 opticals, and a pump.
Audigy 2 - sh!tty drivers. Gonna go onboard sound until x-Fi goes lower in price.

Hopefully when I get these parts I'll be overclocking the crap out of them with my watercooling... at this point overclocking is the ONLY saving grace of this price tag.

The system you were upgrading from is a lot newer than what I upgraded from recently, you probably could have held out a year or two more. Plus, cutting a little fat from the CPU, PSU, and MB you could have gone SLI. :D Oh well, as long as you enjoy it, more power to you.

Why do you need all of that? If my 1.4Ghz Thunderbird wasn't so unstable I'd never upgrade. Even with all of its faults I don't plan on an upgrade for at least a few more months.

Oh and regarding that... well, my friend multitasks Runescape, Deus Ex, and sometimes the Unreal engine all at once on a PIII 800Mhz. It runs like hell but it still works.

I JUST upgraded to one this year.
And I just got a 6600GT and I think Oblivion looks purty on it.

Plus that probably runs Starcraft pretty well for you.

FEAR and Far Cry both run great, aside from the stability problems I mentioned. That's probably because of my Powmax anyways.

Basically did the same thing last month and spent just about as much too.

My upgrade

Except when you factor in the fact that I bought a Sceptre X37SV-Naga and Onkyo HT-S780 as well, I ended up blowing about $3k total.

Why is it unstable? What temp is it running at? You probably need to replace the AS5 (burns up fast) or clean out the fan - as its probably overheating

You guys think I should wait? I can always sell these parts on eBay immediately after I receive them, and wait... for Conroe or AM2 but they're still at least a few months off god fvcking dammit.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Oblivion runs like sh!t even on my Opteron 146 overclocked to 2.7 Ghz, 2 GB of Ram and a 7800 GT. I've thought about selling my 7800 and getting an X1800 or something because Oblivion downright pwns my comp

I clean it every month or so and it runs around 45C on average. Pretty warm, but AMDs were hot little processors back then. The instability is probably because of my power supply or my motherboard.

It's your money, but unless you do professional work all of the time on it that machine is overkill.

Probably the PSU then yea, or your RAM. Mobo's usually will BSOD your comp every day if its the mobo
